re: LSU Baseball 2021 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread
Baseball America recently updated their prep top 100 for the 2021 draft. LSU has 8 commits currently in it.

Ian Moller
Brock Selvidge
Ben Kudrna
Carter Jensen
Cale Lansville
Luke Leto
Grant Taylor
Connor Simon

Selvidge and Kudrna were big time risers in the rankings. Leto dropped considerably. Leto did play this summer (heading into his SR year in HS) in a collegiate summer league. He played mostly against smaller college and JUCO guys, but he held his own playing up in competition. It would be awesome if we get him to campus regardless of his BA ranking.

Here is an excerpt from Leto's scouting report. Sounds a lot like Greg Deichmann:

quote:

more of a power-over-hit bat throughout the summer. He has plenty of strength and gap-to-gap power with a bit more juice to the pull-side. Defensively, Leto will have to play in a corner, with some scouts hopeful he can make third work and others convinced he’ll have to play first if he’s in the infield. His actions were much stiffer than expected this summer

This class could lose a lot in the 20/30 round draft
Leto would be a nice get as his stock has really plummeted
Leto and Crews are two that were definitely going pro back in the spring
Leto can still get it going depending on how the high school seasons go assuming pandemic allows

Simon would be a nice get as well

re: LSU Baseball 2021 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread
Baseball America’s quote on Connor Simon.

quote:

A gamer with an impressive internal clock, Simon has all the physical tools you would look to see from an SEC shortstop. He has reliable hands and good footspeed and is a plus runner underway, having clocked multiple 60-yard dash times in the 6.65-6.70-second range. Simon also has above-average arm strength and even lets loose plus throws at times when he wants to. He can throw from multiple angles and coaches who have seen him believe he is the type of player who is cool under pressure and doesn’t get fazed by the big moments. With a more consistent approach at the plate, scouts see a player who could fit in the second or third round thanks to his poise and glovework.

His write up sounded like Josh Smith to me

He was the starting pitcher, as a freshman, in the state championship game against John Curtis when Ripol was pitching and they lost 2-1. That’s a lot of pressure to handle as a freshman.

Didn’t he close the state championship game as a sophomore?

Yes, he was the starting pitcher in the semi game and came in, I believe, to strike out the side, in the state championship game. I think he pitched the final 2 innings.

Former LSU pitcher Rye Gunter will pitch for Grayson College (JUCO in Texas) this season. He wasn't able to make the most of his chances here despite having electric stuff.

Hopefully he'll get enough innings in JUCO to harness his stuff. He could be a good one. He was touching 95 in the SEC Tournament his freshman year. Struck out a bunch of guys in summer league after that.

re: LSU Baseball 2021 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread
Baseball America just released an updated top 100 college players for the 2021 draft.

Marceaux and Hill are on it.

The thing I was most interested in was that 25 of the 100 players were eligible for last year's draft.

I know the draft will be longer, but with a larger player pool, fewer affiliates, and pretty much no short season baseball option for draftees, more HS kids are going to continue to get pushed to college in the upcoming classes.

Whether the draft goes 20 or 30 rounds, I think you'll see very high percentages of drafted players signing. I don't think we're going to see flyers taken in late rounds on guys that probably won't sign. Especially if the draft is only 20 rounds, I think each draft pick is pretty much only going to be used on guys that have the intention of signing. Those later round guys are probably going to be coming more from the college ranks than the high school ranks, in my opinion.

It sucks for the minor leaguers this past season
Someone like Josh Smith missed a whole year of development but I guess they are all in the same boat
Only problem is guys are likely to get released to make room for new drafted players without a chance to prove themselves

I was searching around on twitter and I found a livestream for John A Logan Junior College on facebook live right now. They're broadcasting their intrasquad game with full trackman data showing up on the screen. They did it for BP earlier today as well.

That's pretty awesome. It's a JUCO in southern Illinois that always produces talent. This is a great way to get their guys seen while still dealing with a dead period.

LSU picked up a big time JUCO commit in Jason Bollman from Wabash Valley. I have his stats aggregated from his first two juco years and summers, as well as a scouting report that I’ll post tomorrow.

ETA: we are recruiting a couple of his teammates there as well.

He is a COVID sophomore right now. He will come in as a junior in the 2021 class.

re: LSU Baseball 2021 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread
As previously stated, Bollman is a Covid Sophomore that will come in as a junior in next year's recruiting class. He played 2 years at Danville Area CC in Illinois before transferring to JUCO powerhouse Wabash Valley. He was originally headed to Toledo before gaining the extra year of JUCO eligibility.

He's thrown 98.2 innings across 4 seasons (2 JUCO, 2 Summer) and struck out 131 batters with a 1.58 WHIP. Early on he had some issues with walks, but both of his 2020 seasons saw vast improvements there. He burst onto the scene this summer pitching in the pop-up Kernels Collegiate League hosted by a Prospect League team in Normal, IL.

His fastball sat 92-94 but was touching as high as 97. He also throws a curve, changeup, and slider.

I don't expect him to be the last JUCO pitcher added to the 2021 class.

re: LSU Baseball 2021 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread
LSU picked up another JUCO commit from Dawson Gause. Bollman and Gause were two of the JUCO guys I was referencing when I said I wasn't sure if I wanted to mention them.

Gause is a Covid RS-FR I believe. He pitched at Tusculum, a D2 school in Tennessee but will be at St John River in Florida for this upcoming season. I have his stats and measurables put together as well. I will add them to this post later.

In three seasons (2 summer, 1 D2) he struck out 98 batters in 85.1 innings. He pitched both summers in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League. He has a 1.09 WHIP across those 3 seasons. I haven't found recent velo numbers on him. In the 2019 summer he was sitting 89. I imagine he's gone up since then if he's making the move from D2 to JUCO (and to the SEC).

Yeah
New Orleans did something similar for high schoolers in the area through NOCA
They played and televised them and had the stats and trackman set up for talent evaluation to get some high school kids noticed
That's what's gonna have to happen and who knows when NCAA is going to allow campus visits in any sport

Looking through the BA Top 100 HS kids for the upcoming draft again. Louisiana only has one player in the top 100, Connor Simon. Connecticut and North Dakota both have more.

That we can keep getting highly ranked recruiting classes without the geographic advantages of Florida or the scholarship advantages of Vanderbilt is pretty damn impressive.
