Day 1 Notes

In the second strong head-to-head pitching matchup of the day also included the Evoshield Canes who sent out LSU commit, righthanded pitcher Landon Marceaux (2018, La.). Marceaux has a strong build with good physicality in his frame. He uses a drop-and-drive element to help incorporate his lower half with a longer arm action through the back. He created very impressive angle on the mound with his fastball and coupled with its arm side run generated a several swings and misses off the pitch. He located well and showed the ability to get to both sides with 65 percent of his pitches for strikes. He varied his effort on the mound and his arm speed, opening the game working 87-89 mph, then dialing it back to 84-86 mph in the second, then back up to 88 mph in the third. Where he ran into some trouble was elevating his fastball, with the heavy life on the pitch it should be held low in the zone to generate weaker contact. Marceaux showed good feel for his changeup on the mound at 78 with good fade low and out of the zone. He also threw a curveball in the low-70s with developing spin and saw it flash depth. He struck out five batters in his five scoreless innings, allowing only two runs.

If there was a category for the “least shocking thing of the day” it would be that 2018 outfielder and Louisiana State commit Elijah Cabell (Winter Park, Fla.) hit the ball hard. A breakout star who went from unranked to a national presence at this event last summer, Cabell has done nothing but impact the ball ever since and has the type of tool set that stands out amongst the best. Physically built and ultra-athletic with his 6-foot-2, 190-pound frame, Cabell provided some fireworks early in the morning as he went deep to center field, just to the left of the batter’s eye, for a ~400-foot homerun that registered 100 mph off the barrel. He has a high leg lift trigger which he uses for timing and shows nice rhythm to his swing before unleashing his explosive hands which helps produce possibly the best bat speed in the entire class. In the second game of his team’s double-header Cabell connected for another piece that in all likelihood was at least in the upper-90s coming off the barreled as he lined a ball over the third baseman’s head for a hard single.

Moving in to the nightcap slate of games, it was hard to find someone who impressed more than LSU commit, catcher Raymond Torres (2019, N.C.). Torres most likely has the most advanced catch and throw actions of anyone in the 2019 class. He gains ground exceptionally well behind the plate with a very quick release. His arm strength could possibly be considered plus even at such a young age with accuracy and carry to the bag. He gunned down a pair of would be base runners in the first inning with pop times of 1.99 and 1.93 respectively. Both runners were out well before they got to the bag.

Opposing Lohman from the opposite dugout was another highly ranked, very talented 2018 arm in righthander Cole Henry (Florence, Ala.). Currently ranked No. 12 in the country, the future LSU Tiger more than looks the part on the mound at a broad shouldered, long limbed 6-foot-4, 185-pounds and he shows the potential to be another high end talent. Though Henry had an extended first inning as he had a couple of defensive miscues behind him and struggled to find a consistent release point, the stuff that came out of his right hand is tough to match at times.

Like Lohman above, Henry showed off a full three-pitch arsenal, all of which can miss bats though he didn’t mix and match as frequently as his counterpart did. Using his long levers to his advantage, Henry shows a long whip-like arm action with solid extension out front which helps to produce hard and consistent running life to his heater down in the zone with an extra gear before reaching the plate. He worked comfortably in the 89-92 mph range and though he’s shown better this summer Henry still showed the ability to miss bats with his fastball when he was down in the zone. Nothing out of the hand is straight and that includes his changeup, an advanced offering that features late diving life in the 83-84 mph range. Showing the same type of arm speed and extended three-quarters release point on the pitch hitters weren’t able to detect changeup until it was too late, caught out front and swinging emptily. His breaking ball gives him a third swing-and-miss pitch as it shows quality depth and 11-5 shape in the mid-70s, along with the comfort to double up on the pitch when it’s called. Though the command wasn’t as consistent as it’s been, Henry has a true three-pitch arsenal, all of which can induce empty swings and he’s just entering his junior year of high school.

Making an impact on the game in a variety of ways is hardly a new thing for LSU commit, outfielder Elijah Cabell (2018, Fla.). Cabell may offer the highest ceiling offensive potential in the 2018 class with explosive wrists and bat speed through the zone. He extends himself easily with consistent loud barreled contact. Cabell has incredible intent in both his takes and his swings, looking to drive the ball through his lower half on every pitch. Yesterday was no different, roping a double in their final pool play game that left the bat with a 99 mph exit velocity. His line drive swing plane works cleanly through the zone with above average strength in his frame. In their playoff game, Cabell showed off his strong arm as well. From right field, he hosed a runner at second base who was trying to advance with a bullet to the bag. He works through the ball well and generates tremendous carry on his throws with good accuracy.

Cabell's Central Florida Gators team won the PG World Series for his age group.

Cade Doughty (2019 Denham Springs) is currently in Japan playing for the USA Baseball 15U team. They run ruled Chinese Taipei last night 18-3. Here is USA Baseball's recap: LINK

8/1/16 Update:
Doughty is killing in this international tournament. Later this week when I've been able to aggregate all his box scores I'll post some stats from his games in the trials and the tourney. He's played damn near every position on the diamond for Team USA this summer. In the intl tourney, it's been Catcher and Centerfield. Kid is a stud.

What does PBR and PG mean?

As previously mentioned, recent LSU Commit Cade Doughty (2019 UT/P, Denham Springs) is playing for the USA Baseball 15U team in an international tournament in Japan. As a whole Team USA is, to use terms we're familiar with here, a gorilla with a chainsaw for a penis. They are running through some of these teams like they aren't there.

Doughty is a big reason for that. In the tournament so far he's started every game. Three games in centerfield, two starts behind the plate. One of the games he started at catcher he ultimately finished at third base. From what I could tell he only had one error through the 5 games. He is really showing out at the plate though. He's had 21 plate appearances in the 5 games. He's got 10 hits (1 dbl), 7 RBI, 10 Runs, 3 walks, a sac fly, and has only struck out once. That's a slash line of .588/.619/.647. He's got a 1.266 OPS and a .548 wOBA.

This kid is going to be a good one.

They have one out there for the 15U WWBA. They're really just huge lists of kids, like 100+ position players and the same number of pitchers. I haven't seen one for any of the PGWS though. I wish they would.

Yeah I saw the 16u WWBA list and it seemed as though anyone that hit .300 with a minimum of 4 ABs...yeah...made the team.

PG just put out a 17U World Series all tourney team, so they'll likely follow suit with the other age groups. Three LSU commits participated in that one, Daniel Cabrera, Matt Schroer (his team won it), and Owen Meaney. None of them made the all tourney team.
