Interesting comment by O on recruiting
Coach O on new signing periods: “Being more selective as far as beginning. This year in Louisiana, we feel we have some of the top players in country. We’ll be more selective w\ our scholarships“

So, what people were saying early on about all the three stars had some merit it appears. Seemed early last year that o was a kid in a candy store. He wanted to offer every kid he saw at camp. Not sure what effect this may have had long term, but clearly it appears he goofed by extending so many early offers...and he knows it.

He did take one too many early on, but I hope he doesnt OVERLOOK some good guys to overcompensate this year. Christian Harris' recruitment is one that just got red hot. We did not bring him for the elite junior day nor does he hold an offer. He's from ULab too...

Well yeah. But so will every other school. And we'll still have O at the helm.

I think his focus this was was to really concentrate on Louisiana so he could push the Louisiana first narrative. Also repair some hurt feelings that had been caused by Miles and also the demotion of Juluuke.

By signing all those kids early it also allowed him to got a huge jump on 2019 which will be the class that decides his tenure at LSU.

Have you ever evaluated talent in your life? Probably not, most coaches in whether NFL or College do this for a living, I trust Coach O and the staff know what their doing, obviously the biggest need from a depth chart perspective, was offense of line and defense of line, he did a very good job Fulfilling that need

Interesting... You wouldn't consider having only 3 scholarship CB's our biggest depth need?

but but alot people said they would be 4 stars by signing period! I was floored by all the early offers. I mean why not wait till near the end of their senior year to see if they proved it on the field not just at a camp for a weekend. To me it looked lazy like they figured they would just get most of the signings out early and focus on a few big fish. Well we all saw what happened with that strategy. one of the lowest ranked signing classes in a long time with what looks like not many early impact guys.

You are right.
Oversigning on the lines along with early departures and suspensions that the staff knew about created a very feel need at cb that was basically ignored.

Signing 0 corners and only wanting to sign 1 corner and 1 safety total in this class makes No sense.

Especially when you were high on several of the player's lists.

A. Cook - 5 star - we backed off to chase Goodrich

Goodrich - 4 star that wanted to be an LSU Tiger but was slow played.

Then Surtain Jr. - A total miss.

I am not saying that this db class needed to be big or anything but I definitely think that it should have been 2 corners and 1 safety.

re: Interesting comment by O on recruiting
There is some logic to being somewhat less selective in the early period. BUT, only if you are going to leverage that against the one's who don't sign AND be prepared to break some hearts.

For the record, this year is what I mean being 'less selective'.

For example, you do like you did this year and get into the 20's, but from that point on you adopt the position that from there on out here's how it goes:
1. list of positions by need
2. short list (3 ea) of targets at that position

You go down the list and say the drop dead day is something like Feb 4th (end of quiet period) and if you're not in, next guy is priority.

In other words, if you're going to be less selective early, be more definitive late.

Or, as it appears now, be more selective early and proceed 'normally' late.

Being less selective can work, but you can't frick it up on the back end. Early and Late have to play off each other for a comprehensive strategy.

I’ve been thinking this for a while now LSUNeil....early signing period plus the 25 cap proved to be an adjustment for him. Let’s hope he learns from it.

The upcoming season will decide his tenure. If it's bad then he will have a hell of time recovering for 2019. O doesn't handle criticism well and I could easily see him losing it when the heat really gets turned up. He's already shown signs of being edgy with criticism.

The truly tragic thing about this admission is that he didn't use all our schollys at the end...

On the face of it, not tragic. With the new rules and 2019 it has value.

What DOES make it tragic is how that came about.
