I was reading the article about one of our walk on running backs entering his name into the portal ( LINK) and it got me thinking, in terms of recruiting, what are the coaches looking for in walk ons? Is it mainly just fast guys that can contribute to special teams? Are any regular walk ons (not Mike Williams) ever expected to contribute more than just the odd play here or there?

On a side note, what is the most highly touted walk on we've ever had?

At schools like Wisconsin or Iowa, walk-ons frequently become key contributors. At places like LSU where the roster is loaded with talent, it’s extremely rare they make an impact. John David Moore was a recent one that did though.

I don’t think too many guys stay as walk ons for more than 1 or 2 years. You’re having to pay your way, spend tons of time practicing, neglecting your studies, and never play a down. I wouldn’t do it!

I think if the head coach would make it a priority they could get these walk ons a few snaps. I’ve never seen a coach at LSU even try. It would be something they would never forget, and I think they deserve it for their sacrifices.

This.

I had a few preferred walk-on offers from D1 schools and ultimately did so at Baylor (when we sucked arse).

Was pretty much just a body at practice.

A lot of them are going to be at college somewhere regardless and not on scholarship.

Lots of fun and challenging if you’re an actual competitor.

neglecting your studies

You get tutors and first pick of classes and teachers. So basically get the easiest route through school.

Still lift, stay in great shape and girls flock. It isn’t a bad gig.

Important enough to have writers from across the country speculate about coaching hires when they hold meetings with out of state businessmen regarding expansion in the Midwest...

i could die as an Lsu fan knowing that in a national title game, all of our 1s, 2s, 3s, and walkons got onto the field by the end of the game.

talk about an advertisement to parents of recruits.

At a place like LSU, the best a walk-on can hope for (kickers, punters, and snappers excluded) is a Daniel Graff-type career. Work hard, see the field on special teams, get a lot of respect from the fans, and be able to tell people you were a Tiger.

20 hours a week my arse.
That doesn't include film, workout, or positional meetings. It's 12-7 every day plus early AM workouts

We have had a decent amount of walk on players who were starters.
Multiple full backs and kickers.

Recently I can think of JD Moore and Connor Neighbors, both were beasts. Avery Atkins this year. I'm sure there have been many over the years.
