ESPN is reporting that Texas had contact with Sabans agent after the BCS last January, then approached Mack Brown to ask if he was ready to retire. Brown said he wanted to keep coaching and they dropped it, but it speaks volumes that they asked him after talking to Saban. Clearly they felt Saban was in play. We all know Brown is out at Texas, and Saban is the number 1 target, and Texas has the one thing Saban craves, which is more money than anyone.

It's pretty speculative at this point, but if this goes down (and it looks possible) it will shake up recruiting tremendously. I'm wondering what the effect will be on the LSU side. Any ideas?

I know everyone loves to assume Mack is getting canned but he got a contract extension until the end of time for right at 5 million a year. Texas has to pay like 21 million or something stupid to fire him. And yes i know UTx has more money than god but if he refuses to "retire" I think there is a decent (like 35% kind of decent) chance he will be back next year.

But this is a stupid thread anyway
Saban isnt going anywhere. Bama can match whatever UTx is willing is willing to throw at him.

Saban is a money whore for sure. He will go whereever the cash is. I doubt that Bama will let him leave, i think they can match whatever offer Texas can come up with. Of course if i had choice of living in Austin vs Tuscaloosa well thats easy decision.

Saban never changes jobs especially after he wins a NC

You know initially when I heard the stuff about Saban to Texas I thought there was no way but the more I think about it I am beginning to think it may get interesting. In my opinion I would think it is going to be extremely hard for Bama to continue this run. Lets be honest they may get another NC this year but that has a lot to do with their schedule and having a QB with the track record of AJ. I don't think they continue to get better. These things usually run in cycles and I honestly think Bama is at the end of theirs. They have also been pretty lucky during this run. I know you make your own luck but things have fallen in place for them more than once. Saban has to realize this stuff. Everyone knows Saban's ego has a life of its own so if he did go to Texas and do what he has done at Bama he would be even more of a coaching God than people think he is now. The other thing is there is only a few schools that he could go to and turn a loosing team into a National Champion within 2 years. Ohio State was one and that is why Urban went there Texas is another. I am not saying he goes but I think before it is all said and done Texas makes him a offer that has never been seen in college football before. I just think with all the pressure on these other conferences to be as good as the SEC in football, that the Texas boosters are ready to do whatever it takes. Lets face it they have held on to Mack for at least 2 years too long already.

Why would Saban leave a better job for Texas.

Because he is driven by challenges, he's likely getting bored in Alabama

Then he would not leave for Texas.

The only way Saban leaves Alabama is for the NFL. He failed there, and I'm sure that kills his massive ego. It is his last thing to conquer.

I think it's unlikely, UNLESS these Luther Davis/DJ Fluker allegations have some teeth. If there is a real possibility of probation, he gone. You can book that.

Saban wouldn't take long to get the Texas program back on track. He'd be in recruiting heaven with all the recruits that Texas puts out every year. He may not see that as all that big of a challenge. Especially when there's only the Oklahoma schools to worry about each year.(think I just made a case for him to go without realizing it)

Yall can light me up for this, but I don't want any of the Bama recruits who've been bashing LSU and trying to recruit our home boys to Bama. That's just sickening, and I don't care how damn good they are!

I think the Texas thing could be legit(imately tempting). They have money. They have a LOT more in state talent than bama, and they have a super-duper easy road to the MNC. Theyd be pre-season #1 and not challenged until the title game every year.

Saban could theoretically rack up the crystal balls, except for 1 hurdle: he'd face a battle tested SEC foe each year in the title game.

My sources tell me Saban was a done deal to Texas in 2011 after they lost to us but then after they made it to the Championship and beat us he decided to stay in Alabama...
