For reasons that are not always clear, some recruits each year get more buzz than they deserve and some less. Pooka Williams, a very smallish lowly ranked rb with grade problems and a small offer list got a ton of buzz. Chris Curry has become somewhat of a board favorite with a national player rank of 235. And then there is Harold Joiner, an ESPN top 100 player and the 6th best rb in the country by the 247 rankings and a top 150 player who no one talks about much.

Some takes on players become popular and then get repeated enough on boards that they become fact. Pooka is an exciting player who put up big numbers and became board ordained ads the next Dexter McCluster. Curry somehow got the under rated lunchpail player tag that stuck with him. Joiner got painted with some softer than he looks brush and now few seem excited about LSU getting maybe its best back of the class.

Of course one never really knows who will be the best back. There is nothing more misleading than a high light tape of a high school back making 80 yd runs through 150 pound defensive backs. They all look all world on tape.

I have never seen Joiner, Williams, Curry or Provens play, so I have no real opinion on who will be best.

I do know this. Almost all of the rating services have Joiner way higher rated than any of these other backs. Joiner has by far the most impressive offer list, being offered by most every top program including Bama, Auburn, Georgia, Texas and Southern Cal.

LSU seems poised to sign him, but there has been almost zero buzz on here compared to other similarly rated blue chips.

Well I am pretty fired up. Joiner reminds me of Alfred Blue, a big rangy back. I think LSU fans need to start showing him the love. Provens is not an every down back. LSU needs two true running backs in this class. Getting Joiner, the third ranked player in Alabama, would be huge to me.

Love here. He is a stud of a RB, and I believe a strong silent commit.

After Hill, LF7, and Guice, only a top rated back would generate a lot of excitement. Joiner might turn out to be very good, but he doesn't really look like those backs.

Joiner is coming to LSU as the next great LF7.........built just like him!

I don't know, it sure seemed like 160 pound Pooka generated a ton of excitement on here. Was Pooka in the Guice/Fournette category?

Slade Bolden gets a lot of love on here too. There are a lot more Bolden and Pooka threads than Joiner threads.

Give me Joiner, I'll go with his size and offer list.

Watch Joiner's film. He's 6'3 220 lbs and never runs a soul over. He avoids contact at all costs.

Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Thank you, this is exactly what my post was about. This BS about him not being physical keeps getting repeated on here to the point people accept it as true.

I will go with his offer list from major college programs with paid professional scouts over internet chatter about game film.

Very few on here have the first clue how to watch game film. The first thing not to do is watch a highlight reel, every single decent high school back can put together a tape where he runs for twenty tds.

The college scouts are going to games and watching all of the game tape.

This kid didn't get ranked the 6th best back in the country not being physical.

I disagree. I’ve seen pussies get ranked high and offerred well. Not saying it’s true of Joiner. I’ve never even watched his highlights.

I don't think we need 3 DB's in the final four slots.

I've got plenty of love for him but I have my reservations. Right now we are in yet another offensive stasis as pertaining to the uncertainty of OC continuity, stability and future. And he's also sitting in the heart of Alabama still being heavily courted by schools in closer proximity to his home. If we end up signing him it will be a must-take. And it would be a stellar recruiting get by our staff. That being said, it's hard to get excited about him as much as, say, a guy like Surtain Jr., simply because Joiner has been a little closer to the vest in recruiting and harder to gauge. I have always thought his play reminded me of a young Stevan Ridley and that's hard to not be excited about.

6'3" RB's have to learn to be elusive to prolong careers with the amount of knee diving taking place. His film shows that he has enough strength to break through arm tackles, lateral quickness, and enough top end speed to finish runs (at the highschool level). Similar to L. Bell at Pittsburg and K. Johnson at Auburn. A change of style that may suit a 2 or 3 RB system well in college and pro offenses.

point me to a single highlight where he is physical. Show me any physicality ON FILM.

You can keep your offer list cuz any player that is 6'3 220 lbs that runs pretty fast will get a ton of offers cuz guys that size and that athletic don't grow on trees.

I knew a guy in HS that played 1 game of HS football before he tore his ACL and he got several scholarship offers because he was 6'6 285 lbs. Nevermind the fact that he was soft as warm butter.

No it doesn't. He gets taken down by a single tackler constantly on his film.

Fortunately we rely more on what Aranda and Raymond, 2 of the only current LSU coaches everybody agrees are the best, than what you think!
As far as “needing” a power back, it 1. Depends on the system 2. You can convince me after watching his tape that Joiner hits harder than CEH or Brosette. 3. No big time RB this class clears the way for Noah Cain, John Emory, and Tyrion Davis in ‘19!

Yeah.. I don't know..

Clifton Garret was the 29th ranked prospect in the country, and left football after 1 year because it was hot.

Meanwhile, Russell Gage, at 898, literally rubbed his balls on Minkah Fitzpatrick's helmet whilst hurdling him.

I've seen Joiner's film. He doesn't impress me and that is what most others are probably basing their "lack of love" on. Although, I've been wrong before, and I would always like to have the #1 recruit in Alabama be a Tiger, but If I had 4 spots left I'd go Chase, Surtain, Joseph, Goodrich.

A running back should avoid contact. They can’t tackle you if they can’t contact you.

Blah, blah, blah... Know what other big backs didn’t seek out contact? Franco Harris, Eric Dickerson and Brandon Jacobs, to name a few.
