Evaluating Portal Transfers

Is there any good way for the average fan to get a quick read on how good a portal transfer might be? It seems like 247 just uses the high school rating for most of them. If a transfer was highly rated coming out of high school, you don’t know if he just couldn’t make the cut at his prior school or if there is something else going on. For the ones transferring from non P5 schools it’s impossible to tell if the kid is coming just for depth or if he was underrated out of high school. You can’t even see offer lists for them online. Whichever recruiting site eventually figures this thing out is going to make some money. It’s almost like recruiting 20 years ago when fans had very little information to go on.

The best way is to look at the offer list. If the guy is getting offers from LSU, UT, 8T4feit, Auburn, etc, then he is probably going to contend for playing time in the SEC.
Don't pay attention to the "I've been watching film" experts on the interwebs.

Let’s just say about every transfer we’ve brought in is going to be a high level starter next year with the exception of maybe Cain (who is still a good pickup and will play). Brooks and Foucha are definite starters on the backend, Frazier starts at LT/RT from day 1, and Lacy will also contend for playing time. We’ve done a great job in the portal so far

I don’t see offer lists for most of them on 247. Am I missing it?

I suggest you summon Captain Crown.
That’s your only hope.

If that player has gotten plenty of reps one of the best starting points is to contact opposing coaches, coordinators especially and usually position coaches because they had to account for that player in their game planning.
That's also the a good route for film because the school the player is transferring from isn't always forthcoming.
They will also have, if they are worth a shite, SWOT (strengths/weaknesses) evaluation on him to give to their guys who went head to head with the transferee; this often includes tendencies.

They just started (I think this year?) adjusting some transfer players’ high school ratings. For example, they adjusted Frazier from 0.7884 to 0.9220. But it’s still a new thing and I imagine they’re going to need to get a lot of data before they can really refine/expand it.

The thing we never can totally appreciate from recruiting ratings is how much the player has grown and developed since getting onto their first college campus. We've had [overall] a good experience with transfers. Mettenberg, Burrow, the kicker from Ascension College, etc. The Harvard transfers haven't been stellar, but still they started for us and that's saying something.
Look at the NFL and take a look at the colleges many attended. They certainly aren't all Power Five Schools. As such, one cannot discount where a transfer is coming from. A guy like Lloyd Cushenberry could very well have gone to a non-Power Five school. He grew into the role and put in the work and it really paid off for him.

Type in the player you are interested in Duck Duck Go or Google and put in offer list
