Walker Howard was apparently the only person to do it at STM. It was a big deal there.

Yeah they dont allow you to graduate early.
Catholic requires something like 4 math's, 4 science's, 4 English's, 4 religion's, and some others. Those additional classes really do help you out because theyre usually higher level than the introductory freshman classes in college. He'll be able to ease into college and not have to worry too much about the transition to college classes.
Also, there's not a whole lot he may be missing by enrolling early with how close LSU is to Catholic and how interconnected they are.
