May be true for the majority, but not 100% accurate in all cases. Hampton is a good example of a “one off” exception, and I’m sure there is a plethora of medical or personal issues that could change this mindset.

He's goes to school on Westbank. He signs next week, he will be eligible come June.
All good. Tiger stronghold area.

The concerns are more about him leaving for the MLB, which won’t be known til the draft this summer.

Hampton is a concern to me. As much I love seeing 2 sport guys, it sounds like barring something crazy, he’s gone. Borderline 1st/2nd round pick.

Isn't it his plan to play baseball and football if he comes to LSU? Why can't LSU give him a baseball scholarship and let him walk on to the football team? I guess there's an NCAA rule barring that to prevent certain teams from having 50 "two-sport" athletes??

Not allowed. If you are on the football team you are either on a football scholarship, or a walk-on and can't be on scholarship anywhere else.

Another rule which came into existence because Bama was exploiting it.

Do we really want McClendon and McCallum to sign early? If LSU hits the lottery with other targets, they seem like the best candidates to make room.

McCallum has a spot regardless of who we hit on. Aranda likes him a lot.

Thanks. I figured it was an Alabama rule...

McCallum

The only way I see us not wanting him is if we get Dean. But we should know whether we're getting Dean next week anyway.

McClendon

I had the same thought. I guess the staff really likes him, though. We'll see if he actually signs, though.

Ok, he knows better than I. My thought was that if Starks and Brooks sign early, and we hit on Dean, why do we need a 4th 3* LB. But on the flip side, people think he's grossly underrated.

A player leaving for MLB seems like a very silly reason to lose a spot on the 25. Is there some logic behind it?

Can Hampton wait until after the MLB draft to sign LOI? I mean, if he signs LOI in Dec or Feb and then goes MLB, LSU loses that scholarship.

It would likely only be changed if a certain team was in this predicament.

I had been curious about this myself, and been meaning to look that up. Looks like we are pretty screwed...

MLB draft is June 3rd, and Div 1 football signing period ends on April 1.

2019 NLI signing dates

However, I’m confused about how Justin Jefferson signed his paperwork in August. LINK

I guess the dates changed when they made the most recent rules changes after JJ’s class.

Actually was, father told me Bama under Bryant would have kids on swimming scholarships and sign 35-40 a year and would oversign just to prevent kids from going to other schools.

NLI's are optional. You don't have to sign one to get a scholarship. What JJ signed was his actual scholarship papers. Either one counts under the limits. The only difference between the new and old rules is that under the old the NLI didn't really count if you didn't show up. Under the new rules they do.

It is not so much that you lose a spot, but rather that you have wasted it. You have 25 spots that you can promise a scholarship. It's the school's choice to promise one to someone who may not show up or not.

Yea, it's a dodgy situation. Don't want to lose Hampton, but can't afford to lose a scholarship either.
