Does LSU only have 75 scholarship players currently on the team?

I was looking at the 247 team talent rankings and I noticed that most all the teams had 84-85 players under the 247 commit column and LSU has only 75.

LINK

Does this mean that LSU currently has an additional 10 scholarship spots open? Or is this showing 10 previous commits that have left the team and those scholarship positions are burned and cannot be refilled?

That's how much attrition and roster issues we've had over the last few years. If the ncaa approves the 1 yr transfer to backfill guys that left, team will have up to 32 spots for this year (not sure if approved yet).

But yes, that's the glaring issue with our roster. We have no tes, thin at rb (have 2 just not eligible), cb, qb, and oline depth.

We had a 10 scholly self imposed punishment for the our lady of the lake nonsense. I haven’t really been following our or 247’s numbers but it seems like a probable explanation.

It may have something to do with the 247 site itself. For example, Raydarious Jones is on the roster list, but it doesn't show that he was a four star recruit. It shows him as NA. Anyway, I would just blame it on 247 screwing up.

Good point. I had forgotten the self-imposed scholarship deal.

That's horrible. All we do is churn players and coaches

Did y’all read the replies. We can’t have but 75 after we self imposed scholarship reductions and a bowl ban last year.
Idk when we get back to normal.

We don’t have any more transfers than anyone else, give or take.
I’m not sure that we had a larger number of COVID opt outs than anyone else either

Opt out isn’t a thing anymore. The term referred to the season that didn’t count against eligibility

The number is only taking into account signees and transfers from recruiting classes.

It's not counting guys like Avery Atkins, Jared Small, Josh Williams, etc. who earned scholarships later.

Also, I believe our self imposed reduction was 8 scholarships over 2 years, so our limit would be 81 this year and 81 next year.

So even with 10 less scholarship athletes we're still sitting at 5 in team talent? Damn

I think you are correct, but lets look at 2 scholarship guys that were here in the spring of 2021. Dare Rosenthal got into compliance issues, he is at UK. TJ did not have a good spring game, decided to transfer to Auburn, so even with the 81 cap (which I think you are correct), that is 79. Go back to all the guys that transferred after spring ball with Pellini and even during last year, Ika who was not getting playing time as he was told he was suitable for the 4-3, he transfers to Utah who runs a 34 defense. That is 78 right there, plus other transfers after spring ball in 2020 (3 days of it) who bailed.

So yes, with 10 fewer Scholarships having the 5th best rated roster is pretty good, although some holes at certain positions, OL, LB and I would add TE. I think some 2 TE sets with TE's who can catch and block could help with running the ball. Again, the TE's have to be like Moss, who could block and catch and now Taylor who seems to be able to do both as well.

I've got a count of 77, but we have a whole ton of players out right now too among that number. Dont think 247 is including Atkins in their 75 while he is on scholarship, and someone else pointed out they dont have a rating on Raydar when he was a 4-star.

Players that are currently out to my knowledge:
Aaron Moffitt
Myles Brennan
Andre Anthony
Derek Stingley
Landon Jackson
Thomas Perry
Chris Hilton
John emery Jr.
Jontre Kirklin
Soni Fonua
Sage Ryan

I might be missing a couple names here. I dont think Josh White has played yet this year, special teams or defense. Kimo Makenole is the only offensive lineman who hasnt played this year outside of Perry who we all know is hurt and basically unavailable.

Last season we had even less. It was somewhere in the ballpark of 65-68 scholarship players. We only had a 23 man recruiting class last season too. Just going to take us another year or so to catch up after losing so many players.

It's still impressive and/or sad (whichever way you look at it) that we're still in the top 5 for talent with 10 less scholarship players on the roster.

The 1 year transfer rule did pass. It will allow Saban and Georgia to sign 7 more 4 and 5 star players which means there will be even less good players for everyone else to sign. You know Saban will figure a way to take advantage of the new rule. Hell, he already signs more than 25 players every year.
