Wtf is going on with the lack of corners? We’re dangerously thin at that position and we seem to be ok with that. Nate Wiggins is a beast but we need depth desperately to the point where Darren Evans is playing and Jay Ward is as well with a busted leg.

We’ve been thin there since the Fiesta Bowl and got lucky Kris and Derek stayed healthy last year.

Is this poor roster management or poor recruiting?

Either way- with the way the game is going it’s dumb to not commit more resources to DBs

We took a chance on some underrated guys like Flott, Ward, and a raw guy like Jones. The jury is still out on those guys. We absolutely need another quality corner besides Wiggins in this class. Our current corner room is not what it needs to be.

I swear the only positions we have recruited over the past year are DL and WR. We treat everything else as though as long as we have 1 we'll be fine.

OL? We've got one, we're good.

CB? We've got one, we're good.

2 transfers,1 opt out and 1 left early for the draft. I would assume coaching did not expect to have 4 guys that play the same position to be off of this season's team. You can always say "add depth" but adding 4 scholarship cbs leaves us lacking depth somewhere else. We have zero cbs on roster that were recruited in the 2017 or 2018 class and ultimately that is the reason for this years downfall. We hurt ourselves by not seeing this issue last season but the coaches were too focus on winning a NC. Sadly, we seemed to have missed out on all but 1 elite cb in the 2019, 2020, and 2021 recruiting classes. DBU is definitely depending on past reputation.

Just a bit hyperbolic. We recruited wrs last year but only signed 3. All 3 have played and 2 quite a bit. They were needed moreso with Chase gone. We seem to want 4 this year. Maybe 3 would be enough but with losses coming and some not really developing or unknown again they are needed.
The DL was the biggest need the last 2 years(maybe OL) but now we have too many? Makes no sense. Last year's group at DE got mixed around because of the base change. Same with DT and LB. Roy and Taylor are pure DTs now and Guillory may be someone that is a bad fit(though we don't know yet). Gaye still fits and Ojulari/Webb became DEs instead of OLBs. Those 2 in turn hurt depth we thought we had at LB forcing kids to shuffle and play out of position in some cases.
As for the current class, LB is shorn up on paper with Penn and Davis. Still not absolutely sure where Carter and/or Brown fit or if they are in the class at the end. If I were to guess Carter is a LB and Brown a DE.
The DE group is excellent and important. Koht, Jones and Jackson are a home run imo with Foreman a legit possibility to perhaps be the best group in the country. No school turns those 4 down. DT is only a 2 man class if things go well, Hundleyand Smith, and that's perfect.
CB recruiting has been a puzzling debacle since O took over.
2018
Joseph went off rail;the never to be forgotten(or forgiven) Surtain/Goodrich dumbfrickery.
2019
Great with numbers and we all cheered back then with the haul. Other than Stingley, we are still wondering what we got. Ward and Flott have flashed, both good and horrible, Jones hasn't seen the field even with us being terrible. We are already wasting 1 of Stingleys years. Not good.
2020
Ricks looks good then we got Mcglothern. We never seemed to have a plan for depth in the class. Better hope Ricks lives up to the billing.
2021
Have Wiggins and I like him a lot. What's next? Did we really put all our eggs in the McKinstry basket? Seems that way so far. Tried to make a run at Green and now desperate to flip the Tennessee commit. And that still might not be enough.
2022
In on a gluttony of major kids. Better land 3 of them minimum and a 4th for depth. Need 2 ready to play immediately.
Did Raymond suddenly lose his eye for talent and ability to develop, or was someone else under Chavis evaling/developing his CBs? The CBs in the Aranda/Raymond era have underwhelmed considerably and numbers were fumbled big time.

Good post.

I think that the main issues go back to Oregeron with his decision on numbers.

The Goodrich situation as you said but that is connected to the idea of only 1 cb in that class which was a bad idea regardless.

LSU only has 8 scholarship WR's on the roster. So yeah...they sure as heck need to sign 4 this year.

What CB transfers? Joseph two off seasons ago? And nobody left early, Fulton was a Senior. The staff knew they would be thin this year at CB even with KV, quit making excuses for poor decision making.

This is where I stand as well.

Bad roster management/recruiting position numbers management and too many projects when we did recruit a cb heavy class.
Ward and Jones were both projects - elite athletes but relatively unknown as for as cb goes. Both of these issues are coaching staff decision making issues.

We are still relatively short at too many positions which is ridiculous imo.

There is no excuse for a coach whose primary calling card is recruiting to have messed up roster numbers the way we do now.

To give Coach O credit he has gone out and gotten players ie Burrow and Tracy when he saw that those positions were thin/weak. However, in order to rebuild or try to rebuild the OL and DL he choose to short change the DB numbers and the WR numbers and now it is biting us in the arse. The WR numbers will bite us in the arse next season if Marshall; McMath; and Kirklin all leave. We will basically zero upperclassmen in the WR room just like we have zero upperclassmen in the CB department now.

Jmo - But somehow we need to maneuver our way back to taking more consistent numbers at each position in every recruiting class and when you do vary in numbers make it a small variance.

Not like the Surtain/Goodrich situation. It is never ok to take only 1 cb in a class.

A DB class should never be less than 3 recruits. It should fluctuate between 4 and 5 each class because you play 5 at a time most of the time.

And out of those 8 we're thin.

We need 4 studs in the worst way.
Now if we would've gotten 1 of button or Jarrett last year it would be different

Lsuva broke down the numbers perfectly.
I really feel like it's o messing up the numbers
It's not a coincidence that we let good players go every year since he's been the head coach

Perhaps its just me, but it seems the players most likely to get injured are lineman and DBs [Safeties, Nickel and Corner Backs].

We've had enough history with a player getting nicked up one year, but able to step up the next and get drafted. It seems those facts should realistically help recruits to appreciate how they'll get to show their wares for the next level.

So perhaps I am wrong. but we got two 4 star QBs that everyone wanted to commit. 4 star RB. and another four star RB.. Couple of OTs. BTW to compete with Mama you need 12 DL that can play. This includes the Des. some of who are outside LB and some are hands in the dirt DE. CB is a depth and talent issue. We were weak at Nickel last year. Until Vincent figured out how to play.
