USC has 15 players transferring out LINK

Alabama has 16 players transferring out. Alabama football offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien called the transfer portal similar to free agency but without the rules. LINK /

I think there's more downside to the portal than NIL.

I do however think it shakes CFB in one significant way. Depth, the best teams usually can out class teams straight up sure, but what is often overlooked is the depth that the bigger programs have. With the portal eating into that theres some potential for some whacky seasons coming up.

Cincinnati, Syracuse, UNLV and North Carolina. Boy I just can't wait for NIL and portal to make that final 4 in football

Kids that are highly rated and don't perform will also pay for these new rules.

Kids that do well and weren't 4-5 star players will be able to upgrade schools too.

The transfer portal has essentially turned non power five schools into farm systems.

And, there is no salary cap on NIL. So, it is actually crazier than the league now.

See A$M, they are going to attempt to buy their way into a NC. I don't think it will be successful.

At least 4 of the Alabama transfers are walkons, so it’s a bit misleading.

Bama’s transfer losses will continue into the spring. It’s a whole new ballgame.

Bama will replace walk-ons and recruits that haven't panned out with players that have proven they can play.

This transfer thing is a win for Bama, not a loss.

We will learn if that’s true in 2022. It could also make Bama repeating more difficult by elevating other SEC teams.

Most of the players transferring out are the ones not seeing playing time at Bama because of the starters...players in the transfer portal want playing time that is why they are there...they are not going to transfer into Bama to sit the bench when that defeats the whole purpose of them entering the portal in the first place to find a team they can start right away for...

Even A$M with all the money dished out will see several transfers from this class at some point in the near future. That initial payout can only do so much to satisfy the need to see the field and put film on deck.

I see it the same way.

Because of the circumstances with the portal this year they just chose to process them differently this year because they want those 7 extra spots.

They are using losses in the portal to create spots to upgrade their bench.

Except for Sanders, straight up playing time transfer there and I bet you they didn't want him going. The rest of them were probably notified of non-renewal verbally if they didn't transfer. If they didn't enter the portal they would have received a note from the medical staff they were medically ineligible and not been renewed.

This doesn’t make a lot of sense. First off, they can only replace 7 transfers so why would they be processing any more than that?

Second, if they aren’t scholarship players then they don’t qualify for replacement under the waiver anyway.

ETA: After some quick checks, it appears I’m wrong. Alabama already qualifies for the full 7 replacement signees as I suggested. However, they can’t actually take a full class of 32 right now without exceeding the 85 maximum scholarships.

So while they aren’t technically getting additional signees for any of these transfers, they are freeing up scholarships under the 85 limit. Which is effectively the same thing.

Unlike us, they are also having to keep one eye on the 85 limit also in a year where they can take 7 (for them 5, because they take at least 27 every year with the medical retirements) extra.

Don't forget the portal has been very good to them. 2 major impact starters in Tuo'oto (somehow immediately eligible) and Williams (somehow immediately eligible). So in a year where there are more, better, players than normal AND they've had so much success with it they are going to try it again but need to be under 85 to start spring camp.
