Biggest recruiting job this year may be to get upperclassmen to come back.
Since everyone has been given another year of eligibility, the Tigers could address all kinds of experienced depth issues by getting some upperclassmen to come back if they are not on the first two days of the draft.
Could you imagine convincing Shanahan to work on being a Center for another year? A couple of Anthony, Logan, Farrell, Moore, Lewis, Evans, or Thorton could make a big difference in 2021.
LSU currently has about 26 upper class players on the 2020 roster. Wouldn't it be great to get that number up for 2021.

Naw it’ll be Cregg signing OLs and Orgeron signing DLs. Time to step up if we want to get to Bama level

Extreme success (in volume, number of players) in what you are saying has a significant downside.

We already have to shed players every year to stay under the 85. If don't have that attrition we will likely have to tare down this and next years recruiting class.

And in 1-2 years, when those retained players do move on, we have huge holes.

The system is based on recruiting at a high level, each and every year. Without a steady, and I do mean steady, stream of new talent that sees the field quickly you get down years, which in turn hurts recruiting... it can turn into a downward spiral. Sometimes slow, sometimes but rarely fast.

A "bumper crop" next year can result in a "drought" in the subsequent year(s) due to sheer numbers management.

Not saying don't try for at all. But you have to do it with strategic moderation. The quicker the position to the field, the less you want to do. So OL, hell yeah. RBs, hell no.

In ordinary cases you are absolutely correct but being 15 under is hard to make up with the considerable amount of losses we seem to take every year. It's gonna be paramount we keep attrition lower than usual these next couple of years and hit big in recruiting.
McMath
Kirklin
Shanahan
Deculus
Farrell
Logan
Moore
Anthony
Thornton
Cox
Lewis
Carter
Stevens
Von Rosenberg
Those are the srs. Some like Stevens, Cox, Logan and Deculus are are unlikely, maybe Farrell and McMath as well. However if we can get Shanahan, Moore, Anthony, Thornton and Lewis to return it would be big for depth at those particular spots. Shanahan and Lewis in particular. Depending on how they play this year we may not want Moore, Anthony or Thornton back especially with young pups coming in. It will be interesting. Not even taking into account juniors and normal underclassmen attrition. We need a good year of low attrition to build back our numbers.

good point. Which leads me to one of my random but related thoughts...

The NFL draft is likely to be a jumble. With players opting out, 2 P5 conferences not playing at all, some teams (that play) will over-perform and some will under-perform. With this in mind there's likely to be a shake up or jumble in where players are drafted.

Most draft grades are given in a vacuum. It's what you as a player are worthy of based on you and you alone.

LSU needs to bring in consultants to analyze likely draft positions, not grades. Preferably an outside firm, not LSU affiliated personnel with vested interest. Every year there are guys who do not get drafted anywhere near their grade. And with the aforementioned "jumble" that will be even less predictable and more exacerbated.

If retention is more important than ever, the opportunity is there with the 1 yr. no-loss of eligibility, and higher risk in draft positions for many players special attention to giving the best advice is very important for all involved, not the player or the school alone.

With the current numbers and recruiting restrictions, it’ll be a LONG time until we see this issue again

Yep. LSU needs to ask for more scholarships due to Covid. All the NCAA can tell LSU is no.

That too, but he's right. After a national championship in 2015, Bama brought back a defense that included;

2015 stats
DL Jonathan Allen 14.5 TFL 12 sacks 2 FF
LB Tim Williams 12.5 TFL 10.5 sacks
LB Ryan Anderson 11.5 TFL 6 sacks
S Eddie Jackson 6 ints 2 TDs 3 TFL 1 FF

Oh and Reuben Foster also came back after a 2nd round draft grade.

Those were all juniors BTW

On just about any other team, Deculus and Shanahan would be the only OL expected to leave after this year, but at LSU, we could legit lose all but one guy. We'll probably need to recruit Hines and Ingram back for next year.
