Both things matter.

Coaching and Talent.

Would you rather have a good coach/developer of talent developing a "3" (somewhat lesser talented player in general) or a "5" (talent).

Now I agree that any rating system including pro scouting is speculative. Some first rounds guys are busts and some FA are highly productive.

However, practically and statistically your highest per centage chances of winning consistsntly is with the better coaches developing and coaching the better talented players.

I believe most of us know that 3 Stars can be developed, as there are many former 3 Stars playing in the NFL.

The question for LSU at this time: Is this the right coaching staff that can develop them and the other players?

You may be the only sane poster. Thanks. Go Tigers. I think Ms State would have beaten anyone last Saturday, they were that high.

somewhat agree and also disagree with all this. I think what Op means is that a three star in year 4 or 5 will equal a 4-5 star in year 1-2.

There are upsides to both.

A high 4 or 5 star player is usually already close to the top of his game. He doesn't need as much coaching to get him ready for play. Basically, he's very good already. The downside of these players are that if they really are that good, they are going to leave early to go to the NFL. This isn't an issue if you are able to reload with more 4 and 5 star players every year but if you can't, you are left with big holes at that position.

The upside to a good 3 star guy is that he will generally be here for 4 years or possibly 5 if he redshirts. If you have good coaches that can evaluate a good 3 star player that has the drive and ambition to become a really good player and can coach up that player, you won't be left with such huge gaps in player ability in that position because it's far easier to get 3 star players that the few 4 or 5 stars out there.

The downside to 3 star players is they do require much more coaching and generally do not have the prototypical measurables for the position.

We've had some 3 star players that turned out to be very good.

Most programs don't have an overwhelming number of 5 star players because well there's not very many of them.

Miss State started
1 5star
4 4stars
6 3stars

Out of the 3 stars one was committed to UT,another Michigan State and GA Tech. They all switched and signed with State. That's some pretty good talented on defense to work with. You throw in one of the better DC's you'll find in college football and you get the results they are getting this year.

You also have to throw in the fact Mississippi high school players never get ranked high besides a hand full each class.

That's my point. It's hard to load up on 4 and 5 star players every year.

Miss St had a five star. Maybe that was the problem. I bet Georgia had ALL 3 stars.
