1. DIY
2. Reasonably priced metal component?

DIY how did u do yours? I’ve seen videos using the threaded dumb bells with the star shaped nut as components. Also seen one using pipe clamps.

Choice of wood for the jaws of the vice? Maple or some other good hardwood? Or am I overthinking this and red oak or even pine will work?

Buying completed (meaning hardware and wood) vices at woodcraft or rockler seems ridiculously priced.

Harbor Freight.

They'll beat DIY.

Lee Valley front vise with a red oak clamp face made from leftover stair tread and the handle from an oak dowel. Think it was $80. Veritas has some nice vises that are DIY face.

Depends on what you want to do. I built a moxon vise like this that is good for dovetailing:

Works quite well and is cheap to build.

I also have a quick release vise that was my dad's vise mounted to the front of my bench.

I think the jaw material really doesn't matter that much. I used maple because I had it. Red oak would work. I'm sure pine would work also.

I built this moxon with a kit from bench crafted.

This is my workbench vice. I bought it on Craigslist a few years ago. I like it but I've never tried the leg style pictured earlier. I don't know what the advantages of each are.

Nice. I saw one like that too. $200 and vintage. It was gone before I could text “still available”?
