I only have a couple of bushes but they produce a decent crop. However, the birds maul them once they ripen on the bush. I heard you can ripen them in a paper bag but they won't be as sweet. Any other tips?
I used to use netting but it was a pain and birds were getting caught.

According to the Google machine, it depends:

quote:

White and green colored blueberries will not ripen after they are picked; while blueberries that have already turned purple, red or blue-ish usually DO ripen after they are picked (if they are kept at room temperature to ripen).

They will ripen but are not nearly as sweet and almost bitter. Do you have any other type of deterrent? Scarecrow? My parents have a windmill on their property that seems to keep them away.

I tried hanging CD's throughout the bushes thinking the movement and light reflecting off would be a deterrent. Not very effective...

Thanks! I bought that exact net two years ago. It was a pain to use because the bushes are fairly tall and a Cardinal still found a way in...

My dad uses the nets but some of the birds are going to get under it and get trapped. He keeps his bushes cut back so they aren't real tall

I've heard people use a scarecrow setup next to the bushes with outdoor speakers connected to him and playing talk radio on a loop. Heard it was very effective on birds.
