Wife hired unlicensed roofing company to perform repair job
Had a roof leak that soaked the ceiling in my guest bathroom. I called a number of companies that didn’t have availability until next week. She called around some and found one that could send someone out the same day.

The company has good reviews but not very many. I learned through one review that the company is not licensed. I couldn’t find any information online to confirm they are licensed and the BBB says they aren’t registered.

I have no way of evaluating the job they did outside of waiting to see if the same spot leaks in the future.

Would you be concerned about something like this? I imagine there are plenty of handymen and workers who do jobs without a license. Seems odd to me, but I can certainly worry too much sometimes.

What was the source of the leak? Flashing around a vent pipe?

If minor, I would not worry about it. It is most likely something you could have done yourself.

Yeah he said he had to extend the flashing. Not a big repair. He also found a second spot that had rusted bolts under the shingles. He replaced those and redid the shingles. Was probably moisture buildup from a large tree that used to be in front of the house and constantly dropped debris on the roof right there.

$350 job.

It’s fine. Just spooked me a bit because I usually hire only the most reputable (and often more expensive) companies. Not out of snootiness but I just want to know it’s done right the first time.

I would be less concerned about some license and more worried about insurance.

Roofing is not rocket science, so I'd think you'd be OK with a simple repair or two they performed.

I'm retired now, but did handyman type work for many years to make some extra cash and was never licensed, and the people I worked for were informed of that.

I had more work than I really wanted most of the time and never/ever advertised in any way, shape or form. I got all my work by word of mouth recommendations from pleased customers.

As someone that had to chase leaks on a building before and only used licensed contractors; just because it leaks again in the future does not mean he did a bad job.

Try running a hose in the area.

Louisiana does not have an actual roofers license. There are remodelers, general and mold remediation license only. Insurance is the bigger issue.
