Most of them are pretty reliable. Frigidaire maybe.

they are all hit or miss but the only 2 things that matter most is the amount of air they blow and the noise level when running

remember, if it sounds quiet in the store it will still be noisy trying to watch TV in the same room, if you think its noisy in the store you wont be able to hear your TV at all at home

the more air you feel coming out directly correlates in how well it stirs the air in the room to cool it. if you cant feel the air from 5 ft in front of it then thats as far as the cooling will reach unless you run extra fans to help it

All I saw at Lowe's was GE models. A brand I don't trust

What’s wrong with GE??

I bought a Frigidaire 15,000 BTU but without heat a couple months ago for my 800 sq ft office. It cools it beautifully so far but I’m curious to see how it cools in July.

A fan distributing the air makes a HUGE difference. We keep cheep window units in the shed to throw in during a power outage and they kind of sucked until I added fans in the rooms. 3 window units can keep the entire house (2300sf) 70 with fans distributing the cold. I think we have 8k units. It makes me wonder why we haven't made a transition from central air to separate units, obviously not window units, but there are other options.

just one room. A converted garage that wasn't on central.

We have a Friedrich in the garage that came with the house. I know it is at least 11 years old. It is a tad loud but works like a charm. It gets used nearly every day.
