Gotta wait until the lawn is at somewhat active.

I think I did mine late April or beginning of may last year and it did wonders for my lawn.

This may go without saying but make sure you bag as well.

Bagging isn’t an option. This is a large rule area yard around 5 acres I mow with 60 inch zero turn. Just going to cut it low then let it grow.

I scalp mine as soon as the first signs of green start showing. You gotta bad though. If not I wouldn’t worry about scalping.

How low do you set your mower?

As low as the mower can go.

I need to do some leveling so last year I had to go 1 notch higher than the lowest setting just so the mower would move.

Bagging is key. I’d at least get a lawn sweeper and collect the clippings that way.

How does bagging help so much? What if I hit it low then go back a little higher and mulch it up?

Trust me I cut mine for first time at lowest setting and it throws a lot of clippings and it can mat up and create thatch. I’ll have to go back over mine with a push mower to bag.

Would a lawn sweeper pick em up?

I’m in a similar spot as OP. I’d like to scalp, but can’t reasonably bag the whole yard. My zero turn doesn’t have a bag, but I have a push mower with it. But it’s about 1-1.5 acres of Zoysia/Bermuda I’d like to scalp.

As low as you can go without hitting dirt. So if your lawn has dips you’ll have to adjust accordingly

You never want to cut more than 1/3 of the leaf blade because that creates thatch. Scalping is cutting more than 1/3 so you’ll have to bag. The reason you scalp is to remove the old grass and allow the sun to warm the soil faster. Not bagging accomplishes neither of those things.

It's better than nothing.

I usually cut as low as I can with the zero turn then go behind with my push mower and bagger. That would be a little much on 1+ acre though I have just a half acre.

On the same subject, I don’t like to apply pre-emergent until after the scalp. Does it really matter? Is so, waiting to scalp means a delay in applying pre-emergent and my understanding is that it should be done in February.

No, not as long as the lawn is already established.

My concern would be that it is too late for the pre em or too early to scalp. Pre em generally needs to be done before green up starts and scalping needs to be done when green up starts. As long as you water the pre me in then it will reach the soil regardless of lawn density.

I have a full acre lot. I am thinking I am going to get a local yard company to quote a one time cut and bag.

That is not a bad way to go at all. Never thought about that and would help big time with tax season coming up and the long hours I'll be working.

What if you blow the yard after scalping? Most of it is dry and brown right now, so it should be pretty light and dry and blow off ok.
