Both of these pics are from my backyard and they're both supposedly centipede. The grass in the first pic is much thicker, greener, and softer to walk on than the 2nd pic. These spots are roughly 10' away from each other. Are they both centipede?

Ditto. Blades look way too thick to be centipede.

Top looks like St Aug and Bottom like centipede.

St aug will eventually overtake it.

I agree with this. But pull a stolon (runner) up and compare to this. Leaves opposite each other On the stolon, St Aug. Leaves in an alternate arrangement on the stolon, centipede.

Thanks. I guess that makes sense. When I built last year, I only had landscaper do sod around half of my backyard. He did centipede. I then bought 8 pallets of what I thought was centipede from Kelly Sod and laid myself...apparently that was St. Aug. Good news I guess is that I got the St. Aug grass at a good deal since I was supposed to be getting centipede for that price.

So, the St. Aug will eventually takeover all the centipede? Is that something that happens over years?

Could also be different breeds of centipede.

If it is St Aug it will take many years to take over.

That top pic looks completely like St Aug to me. Plus the runner in view in the bottom left corner.

Centipede. And you need to sharpen your mower blades. Haha

I think they are both centipede but hard to tell exactly without a stolon. If you ordered sod from Kelley Sod it most definitely centipede.

CARPET GRASS!!!!!

Top looks like carpet grass and the bottom looks like st. aug.

If you go pull it up, does it pull of a runner or like a small clump?

CARPET GRASS!!!!!

Carpet grass does look a lot like St Augustine. Easy to iD carpet grass by the unique seedhead if you can avoid mowing a small patch and let the seed head form - it will typically form a seedhead in a week at these temperatures.

Yeah the width of the blades on the top pic make me say carpet and st aug mix. The bottom pics looks like st aug centipede mix

Carpet grass is actually pretty decent stuff if you keep it cut. Seed heads just get aggravating if it goes to raining and you get behind on mowing. One reason I use MSM instead of celcius a lot of the time is that I deal with a lot of carpetgrass. (Pretty sure celcius will kill this huh?)

Celsius will smoke carpet grass. From the looking at the pics I'd say carpet/st aug up top and centipede on the bottom. There is a centipede runner in the top pic, to the left, slightly reddish runner.

Takes to applications in my experience. Or maybe I just get impatient?

I seem to recall it took 2 applications of Celsius to eliminate carpetgrass in my yard, didn’t have much, but eliminate it did. Haven’t seen a carpetgrass seedhead in 2 years.

I had a ton. The old owner did not take care of his yard. I'm going on my second lawn season with it. Still a mess, but getting better.

This is all from within about 20' of each other. Is this centipede with some carpet grass?
