i know pool threads have been showing up a lot. sorry for another one.

We have been saving for a pool for a few years. We saved 60k to pay for one. Had a guy come out and our 15x35 gunite pool came in at 69,750. no automation. 4 lights, chlorinator, variable pump, cool deck, and like 700 sq ft of concrete.

That said, he said he can get the price to around 60 if i make the pool a little smaller. My question is, do i make it shorter or less wide? i will have sitting ledges on both sides and in the deep end with a 5 ft tanning ledge.

If you downsize, go shorter. The width makes a noticeable difference as you go narrow.

I'd drop the cool deck then ask him to size the pool to fit your budget... Maybe bring the pool down to 14x32. You can always do the cool deck later after you save some more $$$. Once you build the pool, there is no making it bigger!

We have a pool with no cool deck. Sure the concrete can get warm, but it isn't unbearable even in the last few weeks with the high temps.

On another note, automation isn't that expensive these days. If you don't have a heater or water features, I could see not needing it. However, I control my pool constantly with my phone. Admittedly, most of that is switching b/t the spa and pool and turning on/off my water features.

One thig to keep in mind about the tanning ledge is that your pool cleaner won't get up there and clean it. So that is the one place you'll always about to manually brush. We have a tanning ledge and my wife uses it occasionally, but I would be happier without. And before you shrink it to 5', make sure you have a chair that will fit in that 5' space. It isn't much of a tanning ledge if you can't fit a chair there.

Drop the tanning ledge and put benches around the whole thing.

We didn’t do a tanning ledge, just did steps across the pool with 18” treads. Great for the kids. And nice for sitting on for adults as well. Doesn’t take up as much space as a tanning ledge and I really like that.

A 5 foot tanning ledge is too small, we did 9 feet and wish it was 10. So, if you are sticking at 5 I would drop that feature all together.

Consider a freeform versus a rectangle if you are looking smaller, they are more functional as smaller pools than rectangle.

If you go less than 35 or so consider that your slope to your deep end will either be uncomfortably steep or start pretty far into the shallow. Kids will live in the shallow end, adults too, so unless you are going diving well deep dont sweat going to 7 or so feet.

I have a sitting ledge down my entire left side of 38 feet, I like it all on one side as it doesnt narrow but on one side.

What plater is he putting in, if an upgraded plaster consider going base without pebbles or quartz. We have quartz and honestly it doesnt add much.

But you asked a question, shorter or less wide? If deep end is shallow, go shorter. If deep end is deep go narrower.

Mine basic Dolphin S200 climbs up in there and cleans

I never really thought about it, it is 13 inches deep instead of 9, so maybe that is it.

mine will start at 3.5 ft and go to 6 ft. i will have sitting ledges down one side and across the deep end. One side will be left open and i will have deck jets on that side. I will probably stick to a 6' tanning ledge.

totally disagree. go as big as you can and add the lights, looks way better.

my current pool is a tad smaller than my last, wish it was bigger and mines way bigger than 15x25. Sorry but 15x25 is tiny.

That's the difference. I have the same cleaner. My ledge is the depth of the first step so probably 8" or so.

What builder and are you locked to him? They can vary pretty substantially. I built last year in Walker.

A 6’ tanning ledge is pretty useless. I assume you (or the wife) wants the typical ledge lounger chairs that lay back. I have an 8 ft ledge and they just barely fit. You can get more upright chairs, but that’s not usually what the women have in mind.

My pool “swimming area” is 18x28, which does not include ledges/benches/steps. I have a 8ft ledge on one side and a spa/6ft ledge on the other. Mine is also a “sport pool” and goes from 3.5-5.5-3.5 ft. I would not recommend going much smaller than 25 ft for the open swimming area. 15 ft wide is also about the minimum, unless you really start getting into “cocktail” or “splash” pools.

As mentioned, I’d cut anywhere else before I start cutting size. I stressed about balancing size and price on my pool and am REALLY happy I didn’t go with the reduced size from my initial sticker shock reaction. Cool deck can be done later. Upgraded plaster (pebble or quartz) is not a huge deal. You could even sub out the concrete yourself as I found pool builders overcharge quite a bit for it. Landscaping can also be done later. Glass waterline tile also adds a lot to the cost.

Should be starting our 18 x 36 pool with a hot tub/tanning ledge late July. 6ft at the deep end with a bench in there as well. I am ready!

Who’s the contractor
$130 sf is pretty steep for what you’re describing. Look at other contractors to compare. Don’t choose a contractor because they can start right away or finish quickly. There’s a reason they are not booked solid right now.
Starting this late in the season means you’re probably not going to swim much this summer anyway way
