Weed ID & Solutions
Stopped by my Dad’s yesterday his back yard looked terrible. Whatever this weed is has dang near taken over his saint Augustine. So question is what is it and what can I do to help him? Poor man is out there pulling it up by hand I told him he’s wasting his time. Not reffering to the dollar weeds, I know what that is. TIA

That is an impressive looking Virginia Buttonweed patch.

Looks like Virginia Buttonweed. Hand pulling is useless. MSM Turf and/or Celsius to eradicate. Hit it ASAP and again in 2 weeks.

As others said VBW. Do this, and it will take care of the dollar weed as well. This is going to take multiple sprays over a long period (months/years) - you can’t eradicate VBW, you only control it.

He might be better off putting roundup and laying sod. Is there any grass left? Might end up being bare soil.

There is grass left but the area it has taken over is yuge. He told me it’s in his front & back yard now, I didn’t notice that. Doubt he would opt to re sod but I agree, he’s going to have bare soil for sure if he can kill even some of it off.

I've come to the conclusion that button weed is from the devil. I thought I had it under pretty good control, then a couple weeks ago I noticed a bunch of patches in my yard. Hit it with MSM and probably need to do another round soon.

Might as well just hit it every 3 weeks for the rest of your life.

When you use the cocktail for spot spraying how much are you supposed to use? Just enough to soak the leaves? Enough to drench the plant/roots?

Pretty much this - probably most non-professionals over-spray, I know I used to. If “x” is good, then “2x” must be twice as good, but that’s not the way it works.

I think I might have some of this buttonweed. I bought some roundup lawn, will that work on it?

The Roundup for Southern Lawns lists VBW on its label as being controlled, but a second spray being required. But then all the herbicides that control VBW state that follow up sprays will be required. So give it try, but don’t spray it if temp s are higher than 85 F as stated on the label otherwise you may damage your lawn grass.

Easy to ID VBW by the small white flower.

I have MSM but was told to wait until weather cools off to apply. Any thoughts?

The only thing that will happen is some temporary yellowing. If you do nothing then the VBW will drop more seeds and continue to kill of sections of your lawn.

re: Weed ID & Solutions
I have a neighbor who I never see in there yard. It is (was) a nicely sodded St. Aug lawn that gets a fresh cut and edging every two weeks by their yardman. Ive never seen anyone spray or fertilize it.

1/4 of their front lawn looks like your picture. I watched the grass turn yellow a month ago and then the VBW took over. I beleive the sod webworms knocked back the grass and then the weed took over. Ive had to treat those little slimy bastards twice this year. My lawn has several scars from them.

Point being, the Virginia button weed in that quanity is there from some other underlying issue. Some sort of stress fungus/insect/deficiency alowed the weed to take over this area. Do what the above posters are advising to kill it, but I'd sugest following a routine maintenace schedule moving forward to prevent it from happening again. There are many discussions about St. Aug annual maintenace plans on this board. best of luck
