What’s everybody use for weed control in flower beds that won’t kill boxwoods or flowers?

Is it really that much better than a product like Preen?

For those tricky spots we put a rubber kitchen glove on and then a cotton glove over it, dip fingers into pure roundup and coat the leaves.

I’ve gotten so fed up with weeds that I just finished digging up and tilling the beds, and I’ve covered them in plastic sheet with holes for my plants, and I’m putting rock over the sheeting, so I only have to weed control right around my plantings.

I tried Preen a couple years ago, I weeded my beds by hand first, then poured it everywhere. After that I tried the newspaper trick. I think Preen is weed fertilizer, and the newspaper is useless, unless you simply leave it to decompose.

Why wouldn't you just pull them at that point?

Spray with roundup.

Most people underestimate how great mulch is at reducing weeds.

Amaze has worked really well for me.

Edited to say that it is also really important to keep a thick mulch later.

Hands. I inspect my flower beds daily and pull the weeds. But mine aren't that big.

Got one of these Japanese weeding sickles yesterday and spend an extra two hours weeding areas I hadn’t planned on doing. It was almost fun. Second time I’ve recommended it today. Thing is sharp and just slices through weed roots. Pointed ends make it easy to get near plants LINK

And as to the paper trick, I’ve had much better luck w cardboard covered with mulch or straw.

Dig out 75 feet of dirt. Apply glyphosate at 10 times the epa limit.

Honestly be judicious about treating it with glyphosate

This is not true. It depends on what preen product you buy. Look at the A.I.

Same trick really. Hands - I just pull it up. But I also cover my beds with about 6-8 inches of ground up oak leaves every fall, to there's not much coming up through that that I don't want.
