We recently purchased a home...aprox. 8/10 years old...Has a State Premier 50 gallon gas water heater. Also has a circulation pump. Problem is we can only get 20 gallons of hot water, then drops rapidly to lukewarm. The Heating element has been changed and still only 20 gallons. Any thoughts???

you have to figure that as the tank is emptying the incoming cold water is taking it's place and is mixing with the hot water. Just because the capacity is 50 gallons doesn't mean you will get 50 gallons of hot water.

I understand that but I would think we should get more than 20.

These two don't go together.

What was actually changed? Or is this not actually gas?

Heating element = Electric water heater.

Last time I dealt with an issue like this, the water heater was installed with the hot and cold lines hooked up backwards.

My mistake...it was the igniter that was replaced.

I have a 50 and if 2 baths are taken within a relatively short period of time about 3/4 the way thru the second bath the water will turn warm. Mine is electric and I flush the tank annually so I know it doesn't have any sediment buildup.

did you replace "both" heating elements?

there is a top one and a bottom one and there is a thermostat to turn one or both on that could be bad too

also after you replace the element the tank is full of air and you need to purge out that air by using the pop off release valve

After flushing out my tank I just run a hot faucet and it purges the air out.

thats ok as long as you dont turn power on, the top element will burn out instantly if the power is on and there is an air pocket in the tank.

we made bank replacing top element after homeowner replaces the bottom and turns on power then purges air

What's the max temp of the water at your faucets?
Maybe a too low setting could make the rest of the water in the tank seem lukewarm

Thanks fellas. I'm going to have a plumber look at it. I'm thinking about going tankless anyway.

Side plumbed A.O. Smith, not labeled but anyone installing such should know that supply goes to the lower connection.

How fast are you pulling the 20 gallons? If you do it in 5 minutes or less it sounds about right. If you are pulling 20 gallons over 15 minutes then something is definitely wrong.

Could be broken dip tube not putting the cold water to the bottom of the tank.

If it is in fact a gas water heater you probably have a large amount of sediment in the bottom of the tank slowing the recovery time of the hot water.

Likely should not have picked it up off the side of the road, j/k

Either the temp setting is too low or you have one shitload of sediment inside if you are only getting 20 gl out of a 50 gl water heater
