I talked to a plumber but he kind of dodge the question, figure I would ask here.

Old house (1960s) I turn the hot water faucet for the bath and nothing comes out, small drip at the handle, I turn the cold on and it gets them both to run. When I do this I sometimes hear a knocking in the pipes in the wall.

Any ideas?

Knocking in the pipes is normally caused by air.

once they are both running does the hot continue running if you turn off the cold? Do the cold continue running if you turn off the hot?

pull out the valve stem and see if its blocked and check the flow from the pipes it may just be the faucet is bad

if not then your galvanized pipes have swollen shut inside with rust

see it all the time with houses built in the 50s and 60s

the good news is in most cases i found its always the end of the pipe only and where it runs down the wall.

cut pipes and unscrew the last fitting and i bet you find the main line still open, if so just run new pipe down to the faucets and do both hot and cold.

as for the water hammering, thats the water lines in attic not being secured letting them move around. go in attic and have someone make it hammer, then i bet you find some wood blocks fell out of place that were supporting the line so it couldnt do that
