Washing machine recommendations

Washing machine just went out. Was planning on getting a speed queen when this day came but remember reading a napoleon thread that they are not the same as they use to be. Interested in what the best options are.

Our Maytag top loader with agitator has worked very well over the last year. They make a 5.3 cubic ft model; we opted for the 4.7 cubic ft model and it's plenty big for all of our bedding and whatnot.
My parents however have had Kenmore washers and driers my whole life, and their current set has been solid for around 10 years now.

Stay away from front load washers, IMO. There is a reason why top loaders with agitators are making such a big come back.

as i udnerstand it the 2 big changes (the biggest problem with other washers) was:
- lack of mechanical switch. this is key for a washing machine to last longer than 5 years
- ability to select your water levels. this is the biggest douchebag move by the govt and the reason washing machines take hours now for what used to take minutes..all in the name of saving 3 cents worth of water.

The old AWN 432 which is what I have has a 5 year warranty, agitator and manual controls. Are you saying the new TC5 model is not the same? What are the differences?

I know Speed Queen is the hotness, but I've had a Whirlpool Cabrio top load since 2011 with zero issues.

3 changes from the 'bulletproof' whirlpool of the 2000s.
- the 'drum agitator' nonsense they relseased in the 2018 model that basically turned a 28 minute cycle into an hour and did a less-than-stellar job of cleaning your clothes. i understand the pitchforks came out and they've changed this for 2019 where the agitator actually..agitates again.
- move from mechanical (basically will last 100 years) to electronic controls although speed queen claims their electronics are better than other electronically controlled washer brands. PRO-TIP: any device designed to spin, shake and vibrate like a whirling dervish on a daily basis is going to eventually frick up circuit boards. that's just the God's Honest truth and laws of physics.
- water control. speed queen meets federal regulations by having an auto-fill feature and a deep fill (manual) feature but i'm not sure how this compares to the whirlpool units i own which give you about 6 different levels of water to manually set.
in short, like my septic system i don't want to constantly spend money every few years on something that is supposed to just disappear in the background of my life so i'll keep my 2000s whirlpool for the next 50 years and keep some $5 white enamel touchup paint and $8 dog ears on hand for when the transmission wears out the agitator and manage the repairs myself.

Got our Speed Queen at Stanton’s. Very happy with it. Laura Boudreaux is wonderful to deal with.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio direct drive about that same age but it makes noises during parts of the wash cycle like it wants to die but it keeps chugging along. i changed the drain pump in it a couple years ago only because it was an easy DYI repair.
My intent is replace it with a Speed Queen when does break.

Good to hear they are back to the quality they once were. I’m iIn Monroe. Do you know a good dealer? Is there anything to look for (i.e. model numbers to looks for).

Do not buy a new Speed Queen made after 1/1/2018.
I made that mistake. They changed their way of washing in 2018 and they simply do not get my clothes as clean as the Kenmore they replaced.
The 2018 models are the worst rated machines on Consumer Reports.

I bought the 2019 TC5 model when my old Maytag went out about 6 months ago. They had just came out and there wasn’t a lot of information on the 2019 at the time. There is definitely a lot of negative information out there about the 2018 models and rightfully so. I did find a YouTube video that did a review of the 2019 model and when they took the front cover off of it, they said it was built exactly like the pre-2018 models. Apparently Speedqueen did a 180 really quick after the redesigned 2018 models. After 6 months of using mine, I am VERY pleased with mine and I am a first time Speedqueen owner. This washer actually washes the clothes and it does it fast. The dealer that I purchased mine from emailed me last week to let me know that during September they are offering a 10 year warranty in case I wanted the matching dryer. I don’t need a new dryer but, the 10 year warranty is included on the washers also. This was one of the best purchases I have made.
