I posted a couple weeks ago looking for someone to fix my A/C. I found a guy called Pal's A/C and Electrical off of the Thumbtack app. He added some refrigerant. It lasted a week and was hot again. He came back out and injected a dye cartridge into the system. Came back out the next day and said that my evaporator coil was leaking. He showed me evidence of dye all over his hands. I was a bit skeptical of his evidence but he seemed nice enough so I trusted him. As it turned out, he wasn't authorized to do warranty work on my Trane. He was trying to sell me on replacing it himself but it was ultimately cheaper to use an authorized contractor.

I called Accutemp and they did some troubleshooting. The first thing they found? "Pal" had never even opened the evaporator door. It was sealed shut with caulk. Next thing they found? There was a leak on my condenser coil. Third thing they found? No leak on the evaporator.

So if anyone is looking for A/C service, DO NOT use Pal's. This guy was ready to have me spend $1K on something that would've caused me to spend another $2K to fix.

i found this kinda shite all the time

its unspoken rule not to call out other companies fort shitty work but i didnt give a shite

when i see someone get ripped off i would tell them the what for and what of it.

now im talking serious shite not $40-$50 differences, just when they try to make people buy new units they dont need and charge $1000 for a $300 repair is when i stop holding my tongue.

i was in the business for 40 years but its even worse now as many shady car salesmen have taken over the trade

A friend owns that company. He, himself spent 5 hours hooking up a system for me. Didn't want to charge me at all.

It’s educational to watch HVAC videos on YouTube and read HVAC Talk forums and see the frequency with which HVAC techs have to come behind other companies to fix issues completely misdiagnosed by the first company. Whether it’s dishonesty or incompetence or both one never knows. But I suppose it’s like automotive repair - if you find a good company or tech that knows how to diagnose and fix a problem, stick with them and recommend them to others.

Yep, and if you know what you're doing it can be a big savings. For example, just a month or so ago, I had my blower (inside) quit running, which kept the entire AC from running and it was flashing a red light. Now, someone like my mother would not even know it had a red light. So, found a video that gave the codes for the red lights blinking and it ended up being a $9 fuse and off I was running again.

$9 is high for a fuse, but what would I have ended up paying otherwise? Certainly would have swapped out the blower motor, at the very least. Charged the system because it was "low" on freon.
I bet I saved $400 at least.

There is nothing more valuable than a plumber/hvac/electrician/mechanic/contractor etc that you can trust. Next time, skip thumbtack. Call the supply house and ask the salesman who they would get to do work at their own house

So true there. My friend will NOT do any jobs here in the New Roads area due to the fact he told me that are a lot of systems not hooked up right.

Agreed. After many head aches and a little wallet gouging I've found a good plumber and A/C service in Shreveport/Bossier City.

I don't use anyone buy Robert Brown for plumbing and Air Experts for a/c work.

I own a small a/c biz in Tampa. I see this stuff all the time. I'm usually not the first call most of my biz is referral biz. This past Thursday I went to a call customer said someone tried to charge him $300.00 to clear a condensate drain line and another $600.00 labor for a fan motor warranty. Dude told him to get lost of the drain line cost alone but was sure he needed his fan replaced.
I get there clear the line and test the motor and the motor was g2g.
Stuff like this is the norm I could go on for days telling y'all stories of the stuff I've seen.
Good luck to any of you with ac trouble. The only thing I can tell you is these machines are more resilient than most will admit.
Truly comes down to the install in most cases for major failures. Get a second opinion if you can especially on warranty work seems companies here will change a major component for the labor and make the homeowner fell like it's a good thing because it's under warranty.
I can kick Geico's azz when it comes to saving people money. lol
