Unique Plant Nurseries
Are there any unique plant nurseries around the state or general gulf south area? I enjoy finding plants that you don't see everywhere. I do enjoy going to the JRN Nurseries in Houston when I'm there. Those are Asian run and tend to have lots of interesting things. (Many of which, I assume have to be grown in a greenhouse) I was tempted to risk incarceration last time I was there since they were selling finger limes trees.

Naylor's used to do a good job of having interesting varieties that you did not find elsewhere.

What are the hidden strange nurseries out there?

In Baton Rouge, during the spring the Master Gardeners put on a show where their members sell plants. They normally have some great stuff. I think it is held at the rural life museum

I think Forest Hill, Louisiana is unique...with that little small town with dozens of nurseries in that tight spot...worth a day trip

That's a cool idea. I drove through there years ago trying an alternate route on a big trip to shake things up and was surprised at all of the nurseries. I grew up not THAT far from there but had no idea it was an industry there.

I saw a few big ones that are proud of being wholesale but offering those prices to the public. Good prices on some basic things, that I may be in the market for soon with some pool landscaping.

Not a nursery, but I am always pushing for using native plants. LSU Ag Center - Native Plants for Home Landscaping.

I share many of those sensibilities as my mom was into native gardening. I got drug all over the Acadiana area and dreaded hearing we were going meet Bill Fontenot to buy some plants. It rubbed off though.

Johnny Naylor is working at Cleggs on Siegan. I talk to him all the time. Cleggs carry his seeds and vegetable plants.

Got to spend some time with Doug Tallamy over the years (Books - Bringing Nature Home and the Living Landscape). Just would rather plant local host plants for insects to attract more birds, butterflies, etc. Also the buttonbush around my pond ensured I had fat healthy bream.

My entire yard is a native North Texas prairie. We are on the migration path for Monarchs so for about 2 weeks every fall I can walk into a swarm of butterflies. I also hardly ever have to water and only mow 2 or 3 times a year.

Maas Nursey in Seabrook, TX

They have some really unique stuff and have been around for a while, so the nursery has a "fully grown" feeling to it.
