I get mixed opinions on this. New house. Options are over the fireplace, of the book shelf to the left. The problem with book shelf to the left is, well, it's all the way to the left. Problem with over fireplace is height and install.

Also, if over fireplace, is a 60" too big? I have an extra that's a bit smaller that may not be as over powering.

I have a MantelMount and love it. They are expensive though.

Also have a 60" and it is just the right size for us. It may depend on how big of an area you have though.

over fireplace is the absolute worst. looks fine but watching it is horrendous. like being in the front row of a movie.

Mine is over the fireplace.

Don't mind it at all and probably prefer it as my kitchen and hearth room (where the tv is) is basically one big room.

If the room is small I could see where it might be an issue but my chair is probably 15ft from the wall the TV is on.

The bottom of the TV is ~ 6' from the floor. It's at 65" screen but my fireplace is pretty big with stacked stone that goes from floor to ceiling (14-15 ft ceiling).

It also likely voids your tv warranty if it has a heat related failure.

A mantle will deflect heat away from the bottom and back of a fireplace.

I've had a TV above ours for 10+ yrs. There has never been an issue at all.
If there was a issue then why do most new homes being built have the wiring for TVs above the fireplace.

No, it does not. I have had 3 family members get TV warranty service denied as when the service center got a hold of the main board, there were distinct signs of external heat exposure.

Because the issue isn't all that common and people, in general, don't pay attention to details. They just want what they want and contractors give it to them.

If you want to see how much temperature rises above the fire place, just fire up the fire and put a thermometer on the mantle. Mine will easily get 20F hotter above the mantle unless I turn the ceiling fan on in the room.

Samsung TVs

quote:

Fireplaces Fireplaces are already a focal point in most homes, so they are often a natural place to mount a flat-screen TV, but you have to be aware of the temperature. The max operating temperature for Samsung TVs should not exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit. A wide mantle below the TV will protect it in some cases, but check the temperature while a fire is burning before mounting a TV over the fireplace.

Yes it will.

ETA:

And just want to point this out. That is ~90-92 in almost all homes.

TV should not operate in temps above 104 according to Samsung.

Just about my exact setup. When we were building, I had my finish carpenter set the mantle about 6" lower than "normal" but above code. The bottom of my TV is about 5'8" and angles down a bit. Its the perfect height for viewing with an open floor plan.

Just bought a MantleMount. Haven't mounted it yet because I need to add an electric outlet by the mount.

Oh damn. That might be the fix, and we have a company listed as an installer.

I second this. I have a MantelMount and I agree it's awesome. It changes everything and is well worth the one time investment.

Did you read it? They did not say "it will." they said it will in "some" cases w/out qualifying that statement. They clearly did NOT say "all mantles will protect all TVs."

20F was just my situation as I have a direct vent fire place with a blower which isn't near as warm. My other family members who got denied (one by samsung actually) did not have direct vent fireplaces and do not have blowers. I would be willing to guess theirs gets much hotter since even Samsung denied the warranty due to heat damage.

I hate everything about them - the aesthetics, the viewing angles, etc.

It's not that bad. sometimes you have no other option.

Everything is hidden behind it when the TV is up.

When it is down, it will expose the outlet and part where the mount is on the wall.

I was able to rig everything where the cables have enough slack to move with the mount but still be hidden by the tv by mainly using zip ties onto the back of the TV side of the mount. It is easy to do if you have a firestick. If you have an AppleTV they have little mounts that hook onto the vents of the TV so they hang on the back.

For us it was the only option. The built-ins are tucked too far back to put off to one side (the tv not being center in the view area would have bugged me too) and the layout of the living room didn't allow us to use another wall.

If not for the mantelmount, our TV would be very high and would bother me.

I currently have a built in TV set up. It sits off to the right of fire place in a corner of the room and I hate it. I am in the process of building a new house and I will mount it over the fireplace there. The fire place is the focal center of the room and that’s where I want my TV at.

We have ours above the fireplace and it's fine, mainly because our sectional sits pretty far away. If it's a smaller living room then I would have figured out a different plan.
