Like the title says, we may be moving into a house with a very big back yard and I would like to line the fence with trees that grow up to about 20 feet tall and fill out over time.

I came across a few things during research online but the top suggestion said it is poisonous to dogs, and we have a Golden Retriever that likes to taste new things...

Any suggestions would be welcome, I am completely ignorant on this topic so please ELI5 if you get into the weeds on anything (pun intended.)

Thanks

Junipers or arborvitae would work great.

I am planting arborvitae's about 2 feet apart along my fence line.

I really like the look of both of them, but my fiancé wanted to know if they had anything that didn’t start filling out for a few feet from the base?

Doesn’t matter to me, but happy future wife... you know.

I went with Savannah Holly to accomplish this.

planted these last year. They were babies when I got them and need a lot of growing but they should look great in a couple years.

Pencil juniper, hinoki cypress or italian cypress look nice.

To OP, do you mind if they drop leaves in the wintertime? Or do you want year round privacy.

Cypress and junipers have die back at times and they do not refill. I like the hollies better.

Leyland Cypress trees do a great job and grow fairly quick.

That was what I was originally looking at, but apparently they are very poisonous to dogs.

I would prefer something that doesn’t drop leaves or die in the winter. But I understand if what I’m looking for doesn’t exist

I have a dog and am not worried. Does your dog eat berries?

I have Leyland cypress trees across my back fence line for privacy. They grow about 2'-3' per year. They stay green year-round. You can light them up like a Christmas tree as an added bonus. I have a dog and haven't had any issues with that. The only complaint I have is they don't have a great root system. So they can be susceptible to the wind when they are pretty young.

Live oaks, if you have the space.

They are perfect in blocking views. Leaves stay on year round, you can still walk under them and use the space for a dog kennel, etc. The width of the branches are at at good height for blocking views.
Not the fastest growing thing though.

Dallas loves the Teddy Bear Magnolia. They stay green and don't fill out too full like regular magnolias. Plant fairly close

Sweet Viburnums will grow to 20-30 feet pretty quickly if desired . They would provide more of a thick hedge look

Mine have been pretty much bullet proof for 10 plus years but now look like shite for the first time after the recent ice storms. Hopefully they bounce back quickly

Didn't originally see this. Viburnums probably wouldn't be what you want for that. They can be trimmed like a tree but naturally grow more like a shrub/ tree hybrid
