Existing 40 gal is 17 years old and needs to be replaced. Got a quote of $3800 for total install and removal of old heater.
rinnai ru160in is the new model. Does this seem reasonable?

Can't speak to the price, but my wife had a Rinnai in her previous house and that thing was rock solid for 10 years when she finally sold the house.
When it's time to replace the water heater that came with our current house, I'm going right back to a Rinnai tankless.

Apparently they recently went from lifetime to 15 year warranty for heat exchanger but I still always hear Rinnai as the recommended brand

Prices my be different in your area, and I'm sure there price differs depending on the gas run.
We swapped two 50 gallon electrics to one tankless Nat gas rinnai two years ago.
Quotes I got ranged from 3000 to 3300.
Obviously the main benefit from switching was the efficiency of gas from electric. If I had a standard natural gas water heater, I'm not it's worth the money

I assume your current tank is a gas tank? Is the gas supply line large enough in size to handle the tankless or does it have to be enlarged?

I just replaced a crappy eternal brand today with a renaii. $2,251.31 installed, including building a wall to hang it on in the attic and minor vent modifications.
