Sugar Kettle water feature
Posted by Vacherie Saint on 5/4/20 at 12:46 pm00
Looking for tips.
I'd like to do a small 4' cast iron sugar kettle, and have some lily pads and a few fish in it. Will rust affect water quality? If so, what paint or finish should I coat the inside with?
TIA

Why not just get a fiberglass?

Because I prefer the real thing, and fiberglass oxidizes over time.

You priced the the real thing yet?
I was saying the dame thing couple years back when I wanted one until I saw how much the "Real Thing" was compared to the fiberglass. Im now the proud owner of a 5' Fiberglass sugar kettle

The problem you will run into is with the fish. They tend to dirty up the water quickly with their waste and leftover food. Routine water changes of roughly 25% will need to be done to keep the water clean enough for them. The bigger the water source the better.
As for the lily pads, that's easy. Buy one and stick it in there. once a week or so scoop out the dead flower and stem as it turns to a mushy brown blob that stinks pretty badly.

Fiberglass is 400ish
Cast iron is 750. I figure spend the cash and I can use it as a planter or fire pit down the road. Hell, my great grandkids can use it down the road.

Just bought a 5' iron for $1200. Best price I found. Unless you find a used one for sale, that's about the rate. Iron ones have to have inside coated if you're going to put water. That was included in the $1200. $1100 with no coating.

I got a 4ft for 750 in Port Allen. Painted the inside with truck bed liner per the sellers instructions. I’ll follow up on how it performs once she’s rolling.

My pond is in ground but My neighbor has a sugar kettle.
Based on his experiences I’d highly suggest a UV light on your filter system. That fixed most of his issues. Except for one.... heat. Don’t set this thing on concrete. Your fish will die.
Also, stick to goldfish and koi. They are hardy and will survive better than just about anything else except for small perch and whatnot.
