St. Aug fertilizer in south La

In order to avoid a weed and feed product , can the board recommend which fertilizer to use ? Grass is growing pretty well. Knocked out majority of weeds early spring. My head is spinning on how much nitrogen to use , etc. Lafayette area.

Whatever lawn fertilizer you decide on for St Aug apply 1 pound of N per 1000 sq ft, and determine that dividing the % nitrogen into 100.
So for a 33-0-0, apply 3 1/3 pounds per 1000 sq ft, for a 24-2-11 apply 4 pound per 1000 sq ft, for a 15-0-15 apply 6 2/3 lbs per 1000 sq ft, etc. Re-apply in late July, early August.
I use LESCO 24-2-11 - you might not find that in Lafayette, but something similar by another manufacturer would be fine.

thank you crawdude. I was about to purchase 33-0-0 but thought it might be too much.

My math’s not too good today, The 33-0-0 you’d apply 3 lbs, not 3 1/3, per 1000 sq ft. LOL

Just what I would do if it were me: fert with an N % in the upper teens to mid 20’s. More even coverage and wider margin for error.

I ordered the Lesco w/ the nitrogen ratio Craw uses. thanks guys

For future reference, Chastant’s on pinhook near the thruway is your friend. All your major pre and post-emerg herbicide options, including granular prodiamine and dithiopyr. Extensive fert selection, and the staff are pretty knowledgeable. I’ve been using their “Bayou Special” and pretty happy with it - it’s a 15-5-10 with slow release nitrogen and has added iron, about $20 for 50lb bag IIRC

15-5-10 with iron for $20 is perfect for centipede

What’s the application rate?

I’ve been using this for a couple of years. I went to go buy a new bag at SiteOne and they gave me a newer type of the same ratio that lasts longer between applications, Lesco NOS Plus. Heard of this version of it? Thoughts?

Tell you what when I see houses on acre+ properties with nothing but grass and no trees, all I can think about is how many vegetables I could grow with that.
And I second Chastant’s, they have knowledgeable people there and will probably be able to answer any of your questions, wish they were open on weekends :/

No, must be a new product formulation - looks excellent, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase and use it. This formulation extends the release of nitrogen over a period of longer time than the “regular” PolyPlus which in itself is an extended release nitrogen lawn fertilizer.
I wonder with that longer/slower N release time if one might be able to up the application rate somewhat and make 2 applications per year vs 3 applications.

For centipede, the application rate is 1/2 lb of N per 1000 sq ft, not to exceed a total of 1 lb of N per 1000 sq ft per year. Using a 15-5-10, divide 50 by 15, so apply 3 1/3 lb per 1000 sq ft. You can make a second application in July depending on how the lawn looks. Centipede doesn’t need/like a lot of of N fertilizer like St Augustine or Bermudagrass.
