With our pool installation nearing completion it's time to start planning the landscaping around it. Our yard slopes a bit so the dirt from the pool along with some fill sand and topsoil was used for the backslope down to the yard. We will put in a couple flowerbeds or shrubs, I'm sure, but we will also need to lay sod. The only thing I know about grass is how to kill it, so I come to you for assistance on what type of grass sob would be best in this situation? My current lawn is a mix of 2-3 types of grass and weeds, so I am not all that concerned with trying to make it match the rest of the yard. I'm far more concerned with the prolonged Texas heat and drought it's likely to face and want something fairly low maintenance.

In a similar situation. I'm planning on having a company hydroseed the yard after they level it up a bit more.

also, does glyphosate kill torpedo grass? I have a few sprigs of grasses coming up in the sand and I assume that's what it is and will spray it and possibly dig it up before sodding

I'd love to go that route but with a dog in the back yard and a 2-year old that desperately wants to play in the mud, I need to get that shite covered in grass asap

I prefer centipede for lower maintenance.

People will tout zoysia as handling droughts better, but it is nominal.

Yes. Kill it and make sure it is dead or else it will haunt you

I have had considerably better luck using straw and seed than I have with hydroseed.

Nope, if you don’t give a shite about it zoysia is not for you. Go with centipede. It’s much cheaper and a lot less maintenance.

How steep is the slope? Keeping water on the grass could be an issue. Most grasses will die on steep slopes. Think about watering options too.

Not if you have a dog. You'll have yellow spots everywhere that he/she pees.

We just finished our pool and one side has a significant slope due to a drainage area for the property. Other sides are your typical gradual slope. On the steeper side we planted jasmine ground cover to eventually fill in. It was semi shaded and didn’t want to fight slope, erosion, and low light to try and get grass to grow.

You need to verify if this is torpedo first and if it is, you will be fighting this for as long as you remain in the house unless you address it now.
