Anybody on here ever level their yard with sand after the grass has been established? Thinking about doing my Bermuda grass lawn this summer. My yard is pretty level but I want to smooth out some of the waves in it. When you cut Bermuda grass at less than an inch if it is not perfectly level it looks wavy. Plan on using a drag chain behind a four wheeler to spread it.
I know my wife is going to bitch about it though because I guarantee you my dog is going to bring half of what I use into the house.

I feel like this is a subtle my lawn is better than your lawn brag

For real though I would probably not do that at all. Judging by what you have, don’t mess with it unless it’s obviously uneven

Go check out a guy on YouTube called Lawn Tips. Australian guy whose day Jon is golf course maintenance. His yard is unbelievable

Bermuda grass is just green on the tips so the low spots might be two inches taller than the high spots. When you cut it at different angles the grass gets cut down into the brown part of the grass so it has a patchy effect. The yard can be rolling but the rises and falls need to be smooth.
My main problem is I installed irrigation after I sodded it. And I leveled the yard myself not knowing that it needed to be perfectly smooth for Bermuda grass. This would not be noticeable in Zoysia or Fescue.

The landscape horticultural extension specialists with the LSU AgCenter recommend sand over other products for leveling slight depressions in established lawns, but warn never to apply more than 2 inches to allow the grass to grow through it. More can added later, if required, once the grass grows through and is re-established.

I’m sure those at Auburn would provide a similar recommendation.

Good looking lawn - is that a specific cultivar of Bermuda?

Thanks. I think it is Tifway 419. It’s probably as clean as it’s ever been this year. Right before green up I put a quart of Gramoxone and a quart of Prowl H2O on it. Probably will spray it with Envoke in a few weeks.

Sand is what my Dad the Civil Engineer used when we lived in Metarie in the early 1970's. Spread it by hand (wheelbarrow and shovel) and had just the exact declination for nice drainage yet appeared to be absolutely level to the eye.

I remember him using stakes and twine to set his desired levels. Was quite a feat with 3 active small kids, their friends, and an active standard poodle to contend with playing in the sand pile as he worked the yard.

Sister sent us pics when she went by the place a couple years ago on a vacation. Whole neighborhood had settled a good foot a half and Dad's yard work stood out from the rest of the neighborhood for having settled a few inches less.

Yes sand is the best to level it.

I’d cut it pretty short and throw out the sand then the drag chain like you said.

I’d be concerned about introducing weed seeds from sand. Be sure it’s been either treated or sterilized somehow.

I think its a forgone conclusion that any bulk purchase of fill material, whether sand, river silt, top soil, etc. is going to have weed seeds. Based on the looks of the OPs lawn and other comments he made, he knows how control weeds. In south Louisiana, need to know the source of the fill to avoid topedograss.

That is the finest looking yard I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t do anything to it

You want to use mason sand. Are you using a greens mower on that lawn? That’s a clean cut.

I bought a John Deere 2653 reel mower off of eBay that only had 400 hrs on it.

river sand (sugar sand) is perfect for this.

it melts when watered to sink into any low spots and will settle and self level so the grass grows over it in a week or two.

if its small spots just buy some play sand at the store, if you have a lot of spots then maybe a small 7 yard load of river sand is the way to go and take your time filling it in a little at a time until its all flat and level
