How bad of an idea is it to dig a small trench and run an extension cord to my back garden shed to get plug power?

Will run a light or two and a potable AC unit...any thoughts? Advice? Don't be an idiot and cough up the electrician money?

Why not just tap into existing outside outlet and run conduit under ground and into shed? You can't run an extension cord under ground mainly because its not rated for underground. If something catches fire you are liable.

That's what homeowners insurance liability coverage is for

Why not both? Can you just run an extension cord through some schedule 40?

OP, when I discussed running electrical to my shed, electrician told me he needs a trench at least 18” deep

That would be code depth for electrical in ground

Why go through the trouble and not just do it right though?

If you are looking for the easy way, just run some UF cable along your fence line. If you go through the trouble of running conduit, there is no reason to not just run some wire through it and set a couple of boxes in the shed. Extension cord should not be considered at all IiMO

He'll have fun when the Insurance refuses to cover, when the fire department reports household extension cord, unrated, buried in the ground.

You may want to read their exclusions. Doing dumb things may or may not be covered. There is a right way to do this, and it isn’t that hard. Trench some conduit and run a line.

Insurance companies pay for this kind of shite every day. There is no you're a dumb arse exclusion in a homeowners policy.

I agree, I’m waiting to drop my conduit right before I go to fill my yard (have to raise 12”). Was just asking the question. Don’t know if OP may not be comfortable around electrical and is why he wants to bury an extension cord

What I did was order direct burial underground rated romex and got a male plug to put on one end and plugged it in to a receptacle on the side of my house. Buried the line and ran it to shed and wired that up how I wanted. I’ll eventually hardwire the end at the house but haven’t got around to it yet.

39 pages out of a 40 page policy are “you’re a dumb arse” exclusions.

Whatever you do, put whatever wire you use in conduit.
BUT, if your idea was to bury an extension cord, please just go hire an electrician.
