I’ve seen posts on here in the past regarding DIY roof soft washes. I don’t remember ever seeing anything definitive. Anyone try anything themselves that has worked?

I used some stuff called Spray and Forget, it was around $40 a gallon. It worked well. I got it from Home Depot after I got a quote for $900 to clean my roof. It actually takes a while to remove the stains though. You spray it one time and then over the course of a few weeks the stains will disappear. If your roof is high and steep though, it is a pain to get it on the roof. I used a 10’ piece of PVC and strapped my water hose to it. I put the cleaner in a chemical sprayer that attaches to the water hose instead of mixing it with water and spraying it with a pump sprayer.

The most success I've had and this may sound dumb, was with tide with bleach powder. I literally threw handfulls of it on the roof and just let the rain and dew wet it and rinse it. Worked pretty well.

just do a 50/50 mix of bleach and soapy water in a sprayer and wet the roof down real good and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. this is best done on a cloudy day so the roof is cooler and doesnt dry too fast. then give it a second spray down and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. then rinse off with a water hose and "mild" pressure from the peak going down to the edges, going with and not against the direction of the shingles.

NEVER NEVER NEVER USE A BRUSH OR ANYTHING TO RUB THE SHINGLES OR YOU WILL REDUCE THEIR LIFE

I was going to bleach my roof on Mardi Gras, glad this topic came up. There are many YouTube videos from reputable channels (this old house) that scrub the roof with a brush and then apply a strong bleach solution.

I don’t have a very steep roof, my plan was to get on a later near the roof line and use this 8ft extension I bought for my spray tank to soak the roof with bleach, and then come back a week later and apply another round.

When I replace the vent caps on the roof later this yr, I’m going to run a zinc flashing strip along the top of the roof on the north side of the house to help prevent the scum from coming back. I got this idea from the YouTube videos, if you notice the shingles under any metal chimney or vent don’t have buildup as bad as other areas bc the metal leaches with the rain water killing the buildup

This is the type product I will be using:

LINK

Most of the reviews are 5 Stars. Some of the lower ratings are how it didn't work immediately.

Downvote away. You will fade your color, and frick up your shingle. It will be brittle and you will see fibers appearing. Your warranty will void also. And yes they can tell.

There is a product called shingle shield. Only thing you should use.

I used "Wet and Forget" and it worked great; however, it took several months to really notice a difference. It is very slippery so you must be careful when applying while on the roof. I mixed it in a large plastic tub and used a cheap 12V pump from Harbor freight hooked to a garden hose to spray it onto my relatively steep roof. Was able to do this from a ladder and cover the roof much more quickly and thoroughly than using a pump sprayer. Going to use it on my driveway and fences this Spring.

Can you give a link or model number for that pump? Sounds like what I need to do mine.
