River sand tips

Getting some river sand and want to know how to minimize weeds. Going to sod over it. Can’t afford mason sand with the amount I need.

I know I asked LSU Ag the same question, and one thing that stuck out was you cannot do pre-emergent ahead of sod. I'm not sure there is anything you can do other than try to source your river sand NOT from the MS. My understanding is there is no control or treatment for Torpedo.

This is good advice.
You didn’t say where you live, but if you don’t live in southern LA and the river sand is not sourced from from the Bonne Carre Spillway or nearby you are not likely going to deal with torpedograss - that’s the major concern of river sand/silt use when sourced from certain river basins in south LA. Other weed seeds you’ll deal with, but laying sod on top will help. In a few months + your sod will be rooted in and established and you can use herbicides, both pre- and post- as needed.

One of the reasons I went with bermuda for my yard. Pretty much can selectively spray for any weed in it.

You might consider contacting the LSU AgCenter parish (St Tammy) extension consumer horticulturist and inquire if they know if “dirt” haulers in your area obtain river silt from areas that are know to have torpedo grass seed. Fill dirt, sand, river silt, etc is not hauled long distances by dump trucks b/c of the cost. Hopefully you can get your fill from a “clean” source.

I’ve never had to personally deal with torpedograss but from what I know I’d do anything and everything to avoid it.

Buy some SedgeHammer because all the seams are gonna have nut grass or green kyllinga
