Returned my kitchen floors to heartwood...maybe?
I returned my kitchen from its miserable vinyl flooring existence to its original heartwood pine flooring, or maybe not.

Before picture
Fake brick looking vinyl I put down in 2008.

Ripped up four layers of flooring down to a layer of OSB.

It had to come up, I was determined to get to that pine flooring.

There was a particularly rotten spot from an earlier leak I’m assuming as I uncovered some earlier joist repair also.

I was able to patch it in with original flooring from my attic.

This was the fun part. Besides the 3k staples and nails that were holding down the OSB that my son and I pulled up one by one, there was tar paper all over the floor. Clearly at one point there was 9” x 9” asbestos tile on this floor. I think it was always like that because there are so many top nailed boards and it didn’t seem like the boards had ever had any sort of seal on them. They were totally raw. It took my days to scrape up all that goo.

I have a flooring buddy with a real sander who let me borrow it. You can clearly see two different types of wood on the floor. So I’m still feeling like this floor was never meant to be seen.

Finished product. Voila.

Painted the entire kitchen- trim, cabinets, and walls Friday and Saturday. Put down new quarter round also.

I actually wrapped this project up last Monday.

Please tell me you were masked up big time at the least. I’d be willing to bet that Old Black adhesive is asbestos containing material.

Seriously, a lot of the time the adhesives contained asphalt and asbestos. Along with the tile containing the asbestos. I’m not just blowing smoke up your ass.

It’s not perfect, but it has character and it’s appeal is that you can tell for sure it’s original.

I think it looks great, and that it was def worth the work.

Good job. That's one of those projects where you ask yourself why did I start this? But you hung in there.

You did a good job. Only thing you forgot was using some wood filler which is a extra step.

Beautiful. Looks like great oak floors. Keep them clean and they will last forever.

what color stain did you use?

It’s Early American mixed with some neutral to lighten it. We have oak and pine our house. The stain takes to the pine darker than to oak.

It’s almost a Honey.
