Recs on a good stud finder ...Posted by unclebuck504
on 11/30/20 at 9:18 am

Need one that shows the exact location of the stud, and both sides so I can hit the stud as close to dead center as possible.
Not worried about price. One with a laser on it to line things up on the wall would be great too.
Suggestions?

Franklin Sensors. I have had Bosch, Zircon, etc. and the Franklin has been the most accurate and reliable. Outside of a small stack of high strength magnets it's about as simple to use as it gets too. The only thing I own that does better is my FLIR thermal imaging camera but you wouldn't like the price on that thing...

I use a cheapo zircon and it finds the edges well. I have a magnet one that I use to confirm if it's really important that i not miss.

I’ve tried a few and they all seem terrible. The Zircon one I have now does a good enough job, although the edges appear like it was framed with 4x4s. If you mark those “edges”, the stud center is still in the center.

Look up magnetic stud finder. I have used these for years. It locks onto nails in Sheetrock to show you where the studs are. Works great.

I have the Stud Buddy magnet one. Works flawlessly. Locks onto screw/nail heads. Got it from home depot i think
The only problem with those is that you won't know if it's a double stud or there's a fire stop. The Franklin units can be used to figure that out and they also sometimes pick up other objects. Mine kept detecting something between ceiling joists where I was intending to run wire to install another recessed light fixture. Didn't know what and it turned out to be a 2" PVC drain line for the upstairs shower, something I'm glad I was able to find before running a 7/8" boring bit into it.

I was going to mention the magnet ones. I don't have one (have a "fancy" stud finder), but had a guy in my house that used one and it definitely seemed like a task that has gotten overly complicated for no good reason.

I am always right! here is what you do, get on that internets go to that ebay order you some rare earth SPHERICAL magnets get your tape measure out from the corner and try 16 inches first then 24 inches, but take a few of them magnets in your hand and rub them up and down the wall they will find the nails and stick to them then you mark and cut what you need. that won't find the stud but it will find the nails.

After several I'm liking

... the big one in here.
Because not only do you get edges, it lights up double studs, and a whole lot less finicky than those wobbling SOB's.
