Sounds like you blew a terminal on your compressor. Which means it will need to be replaced.

Same exact thing (surge) happened to me years ago, although the surge occurred for reasons unknown to me. I had to replace the unit. Friends suggested that I file a claim with Entergy and that they would take care of it, but I didn't do that. I wish I had now, but I was young and skeptical they would cover the loss at the time.

Entergy burnt my house down and they got off scott free! I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you.

Just an fyi, two houses caught fire at the exact same time. It was known that a bad transformer feed our subdivision... for years.

My guess is he is talking about loosing a leg of the 220. I agree with you though it’s already single phase. I doubt very seriously he has a three phase unit
