Preferred grass cutting method ?
Do you cut up and down in rows? Or do you mow the perimeter first and then make smaller and smaller concentric circles? I’m a lifelong concentric circle guy. But I recently just witnessed two of my neighbors cutting in rows. I never really paid attention before.

Cut in rows. Change directions often so ruts don't form over time. But I'm using a zero turn with a mulch kit.

I do an outer perimeter to cut along the edging and then do rows.

re: Preferred grass cutting method ?
With a push mower, I cut in rows. With a zero turn cutting large areas, I do the concentric circles. I try to really round off the corners so I feel like I’m putting less stress on the hydros and more time mowing vs turning.

Southern grasses don’t stripe very well so besides keeping tire ruts to a minimum, I’m not sure it matters.

I will cut two row around the perimeter and then rows back and forth, parallel to the house and the road once and the next time I’ll cut diagonal rows. I’ll vary the direction on the diagonals every other time.

I go diagonal as seen from the street. Looks great and reminds me of a baseball field.

I have a large yard and zrt. I alternate my row patterns each mow to help keep the ruts in check. With as wet as it has been I'm about to start adding a diagonal cut to the rotation.

Two rows around the perimeter then double mow in rows across the yard. Change directions next mow.

I start by running along the edges first; once with about half the deck on the sidewalk or driveway and a second pass with the wheels just inside the grass line.

There are some sections that look best when I make two passes in perpendicular rows. The second pass will be the direction I mow the rest of the lawn.

Every week is different but never circles. That’s about the worst way to do it unless you are bagging.

I always cut a 2 pass perimeter then either rows/diagonally swapping every week. Basically a 3 week rotation and it minimizes rutting. Occasionally I’ll cut crossways but the short runs are terribly inefficient so that’s rare unless the ground is fairly soft snd I absolutely have to cut.

re: Preferred grass cutting method ?
I was a lifelong mower using concentric circles when I had a push mower with a smaller yard.

I now have 1 1/2 acres of yard to mow so I now own a riding mower with a mulch kit. I quickly discovered that mowing in the same circular pattern time and again creates “ruts”. So I have a rotating pattern of 3 directions to minimize ruts and also to not cut the zoysia grass blades in the same direction during each mowing.

My pattern rotation consists of rows parallel to the house and diagonals of opposite directions.

re: Preferred grass cutting method ?
I did diagonals at my old house and it looked really clean. My new yard isn't really set up for diagonals so I cut rows.

Also, when I was cutting grass in high school I did the circle method. My lawn mower bit the dust halfway through the yard and I realized the shape remaining resembled a large penis. I had to weed eat the rest of the yard quickly before the homeowner got home.

I do rows with a push mower. A couple acres, but only about 1 acre with nice St. Augustine. From upstairs, the rows look nice. With rows, I can cut half and stop if I must and that part is done.

Front yard is more wide than deep so I did rows on it. Also have trees/shrubs and sidewalk to go around so straight lines were easiest in the main areas. Backyard is more deep than wide and I go diagonal back there, alternating where I start from. Never circular.

I alternate up and back, across and back and the circles each cut as best I can remember to try and keep rut free, feel like it helps the grass thicken up as well

Risk game method.

First cut the continents, then plan your attack.

Yakutsk, Irkutsk, Mongolia…. It’s on!

I am all over the place when I cut. I bag & mulch front yard and the depth maybe 35' from street to porch. Between sidewalk & street, I will do rows because it's 3-4 passes after I do the perimeter. Between sidewalk & house is circles mainly to get around the trees (1 on each side of walkway to front porch).

Backyard is 100' deep and I leave the clippings. If it's damp I will do circles because I find I leave mohawks if I do rows. When dry, I will go mohawk route.

After edging first of course. 2-3 perimeter cuts then rows depending on how tall or lately WET it is

If mulching it doesn’t matter to me. If using a chute I do up and down rows and then raise the deck a bit and run quickly over the area to spray around my clippings.
