Anyone have a portable generator that they run their entire home on? Im talking about these 15kw or larger portable gas burners. Id like to get something that can run at 3.5 ton central cooling unit. I dont need to run heat. I have multiple fireplaces.

Keys about the house:
Gas stove/oven
Gas on demand water heater
Wood burning insert with blower on north end of house
Gas burning insert on south end of house
Electric dryer (not a must to use)

2 3.5 ton central units but can divide off the house and use 1.

You don’t need anywhere near 15kW to run a single 3.5T unit and normal other amenities with gas heating equipment.

The biggest loads would be any motors or heating elements.

There’s been a few threads on unit sizes this fall you could reference back to.

Not worth it due to the amount of gas it will go through, you would be better off with a regular NG standby unit.

Based on the generjunk specs I just looked up, that would be a 30 hp vtwin sucking down 15 gallons of gas every 10 hours at half load. So you would need over 30 gallons a day if you ran about half load, if you believe their numbers.

NG unit that size is not that much more expensive, and for now a little cheaper to operate per 24 hours.

You could probably get away with 15 kw but that would be like running your vehicle at almost red line all the the time. Not good long term, you really want your generator running at about 60-70% for prolonged periods of time. Also natural gas is a lot better if that’s a option.

Then you’d want to look into a 250-500 gallon propane tank. Or get a lot smaller generator. As said, even if you have a generator you need fuel or it’s worthless. You are looking for 10-30 gallons a day of fuel use if not more for some of them.

He must already have a propane tank since he listed all those gas items.

Aside from the above mentioned- if you are looking for a portable- I have an 80kw Multiquip Diesel generator with a 150 gallon diesel tank and a John Deere whisperquiet motor that I bought used from United Rentals just after Katrina for $4000.00 and it came with a 2 year service contract. I then had my electrician back fed my panel with a switch and have used it several times since then to run all of my house. I was out for 3 weeks during Gustav and it paid for itself there.

I use it for other projects across the region so it’s not exclusive for my home which was one reason I bought it, also the price. I’ve put a fuel transfer pump and a battery on it only and once a year or so I bring it to United and they do a load bank diagnostic on it for $100.00.

I realize it’s overkill size wise but it’s what they were selling and it was a great deal and pretty much could run my whole street but they have smaller units and all rental companies including the generator rental companies sell used and all offer service contracts. And it burns very little fuel and I burn no tax off road diesel.

Just a thought and an option. It’s not for everyone and I only use it when I know I’ll need something long term. An afternoon thunderstorm that knocks out the power I’m not hooking it up. Also I have plenty of room to keep it in a covered barn.

I know several people who get 20+ gallons of gas at the threat of a storm, but if the storm does not hit, what are you going to do with an extra 20 gallons of gas?

put it in your truck moron...

Another suggestion.....

Get a propane tank buried in your yard....(By the propane company) Big enough to run for a week. Seems like you have this already.

Then get a 20kw Briggs...........

I personally like the briggs air cooled over Generac.

I have a 8500/13500 that I use to backfeed to my main panel (I have a sub panel/220 generator plug set up in my shop)

I am able to run my whole home (minus AC...) without an issue. All appliances are gas. This winter storm Monday I ran everything, central heat, and all pool equipment with no issue. Getting about 10 hours per tank of gas.

Many have told me that with everything else off, the 13500 might be able to run the AC if get past the initial compressor surge? (fortunately I have never had to try)
I have been satisfied with this setup.

I'm looking at going with a dual fuel portable 10K+ watt generator for my whole-home use. I'll hook up manual transfer switch and quick connect to my gas line.

Although the generac/briggs whole home permanent setup looks really good, I don't know if i want to spend $10k

To update on some of the points stated. I do already have propane at the house. The tank is located on the back side of my shop and comes in my house on the south side to supply the appliances listed. The gas provider states its too far to maintain pressure to where my electric service comes in to run a generator there.

Electrician says its too far to run electrical to service panel if generator is put by tank.

Trying to avoid putting a second tank, and one that would only have the generator hooked to it.

Fuel isnt an issue. I keep both bulk gas and bulk diesel at the house for farm equip and will burn it in vehicles if i gas is getting older.

I like the sound of the portable diesel. Ill look in to that.

I bought one of the 9250 watt gens from
Harbor freight. It will run about 10 hours on a tank of fuel . I don’t run the central AC’s or dryer. We have it to keep the fridges and freezers cold plus tv, lights , internet , window units etc. I have it wired into my main panel.

Then how are you going to supply these gas appliances. If you are going to use propane just get a bigger tank
