New pool owner. Do I need to do anything to the pumps, Polaris, etc in advance of the freeze?

If you have a heater, turn it on and keep it on. I am keeping mine at 78.

I will be running the pool 24 hours a day for next three days.

If you have a fountain, run that too.

You don't want any water sitting still in the pvc pipes above ground by your equipment. All my pumps will be running.

keep the pump running the whole time if you have any water features turned off you might want to run them as well or put heat tape on the pipes for those features if no water running through them. pray the power doesn't go out and kill your pump

I have these installed on the pipes going to my waterfall and slide so I am not running those

Amazon Easy Heat

I keep my heater on about 80 and keep everything running including my fountain. It’s a good time to get in it too when steam is coming off it. Also my heater is gas so it’s not expensive to run. I had an electric heater at my last house and need my head examined for that move.

These work pretty good also. I use this method.

Set it for a temperature and it kicks on automatically so your pump and equipment runs. Then turns off when temperature gets above the setting.

The folks on Troublefreepools say that just running all pumps should be fine and adding a tarp over equipment wouldn’t hurt. Most also suggest having a plan to drain all necessary equipment if your power does go out. So it would probably be a good idea to familiarize yourself on where the drain plugs are located on pumps/filters/heaters just in case.

They have some debate on TF regarding running heaters to prevent freeze due to the fact most manufactures say heaters shouldn’t be run with water temps below 68°. Saying it can lead to condensation causing premature rust. It sounds like if you keep the heater running for long enough to prevent temp dips below 68° you should be fine.

Just run the pump nonstop, no need to run the heater. Moving water won't freeze

My system automatically goes into a freeze run when the temperature gets low enough. Was news to me a couple days ago when I saw my pool fountains running

I've lost power 3 times since last night but it starts right back up so I think I'm good so far.

So if the power does out, covering the equipment with a blanket may help? Not much else to do at that point.

Our pool builder went over all this when he finished in June. Gave us two funny looking plastic devices that screw in to the skimmers when basket is pulled out. Pump has two drain plugs to open and filter has one. If power goes out that’s my plan. We’re getting down to single digits tomorrow night, leaving pool on 1500 Rpms non stop.

If you keep the pump running you don’t need the heater.

I brought my dolphin inside the garage. Will probably set time to come on every few hours should be fine. Maybe run it straight through the worst of it.

Maybe will cover the main pump and motor, the ambient heat from the motor should be fine to keep it okay.

I was hoping this wasn’t going to be me but it looks like it will be. Power has been out an hour and Entergy hasn’t even updated their site to show the outage. I had been running my pool heater and equipment constantly since yesterday. This may get interesting if my power doesn’t come back on.

I’m in the same boat. I opened up the pressure valve on pump, opened all valves on the lines, turned filter to backwash to release any water in that line and opened up valve on bottom of filter.

Hopefully that helps....

Ran the pool overnight. Came out this morning to low water pressure coming out of the statue and waterfall. I had covered the DE filter with a thick blanket and the filter and pump motors with thick plastic sheet.

Everything was running fine. Nothing looked out of sorts. Decided to backwash the filter, it needed it for sure judging by the mud colored water coming out. That did the trick. Running fine now. I have no idea if it was somehow related to the freeze or just weird timing coincidence. Maybe the extra junk in the filter made it more susceptible to freezing?
