Plastic cap went down bathroom drain

About a week ago my kid tells me a shampoo cap went down the bathroom drain. Low and behold the drain is stopped up now and can take hours for water to get out.

Home is older and most of the plumbing is copper pipes.

Had a plumber come out and say they would have to cut and remove the pipe and then replace it which would cost over $700. We have a basement and it’s in a crawl space.

Tried a snake and snake gets jammed about 8-10 inches down presumably by the plastic cap.

Any other options other than paying the plumber to cut and replace? Is there any drain cleaner I could use that would melt plastic without damaging pipe?

Can you heat the end of a snake so it sticks to the plastic? I'm not a plumber.

Take some pics. Is there an access? What level is the bathroom on and what’s the subfloor? You are likely getting stuck in the ptrap, could be where your cap is or could not.

ETA: re reading I bet it’s a coincidence. My guess is it’s just a hair clog. Get a hair clog remover, go from there.

Don't know if it would get enough of the cap to grab onto but they make those drain snakes with the little claw on the end. $20 to try before spending the $700.

Something like this.

At some point the drainpipe is also plastic. Talk about making a bad problem worse

Sounds like you have a cheap snake. The ones plumbers use could cut firewood. Get a better snake and try to push it to your cleanout if you can't grab it to bring it to you. You can rent a snake from Home Depot or a rental place for reasonable. Cheaper than a service call from a plumber.

Is anything else slow draining? Sink, toilet. Maybe try from another fixture or roof vent if so. Dumb question, but have you tried a plunger?

Sounds like you are hitting the p trap not the plastic hat.

After first reading it I thought you meant a shower cap (like a hair net). Sounds like your son stuck the shampoo cap down the drain.. that is a little different.

Cap is about 1” x 1.5” oblong cap.

The copper pipe I believe is 1.5” for a good way before it turns into 2” pipe.

I am almost positive that cap is caught in the P trap

Everything is draining just fine. Just the bathtub drain is the issue. And it was draining completely fine a week ago and now after he tells me about this cap it will take an hour for the tub to drain.

Your supply lines are copper, but your drain lines should be either plastic or cast iron, depending on the age of the house.

If plastic, that is an easy fix and in no way would I pay a plumber that kind of money to cut out some drain pipe and replace it with PVC-----and that is what he'd do.

If the drain is cast iron, it can be cut with a metal cut-off wheel on an angle grinder. I've done it a few times like that at my house. They make a special tool that wraps around the pipe with a chain-like section that is used to snap the cast iron pipe, but the angle grinder works just as well, just got to watch the eyes when grinding into the cast iron.

They make rubber fittings with stainless steel clamps that are used to go from the cast iron to the plastic replacement pipe.

Check out some u-tube videos about how to repair/replace cast iron drain pipe and you'll see what I mean.

Or enter at the clean-out and push it back the way it came.

well that makes it easy

go get an automotive grabber tool and use that to grab it

might be a PITA and take time, but eventually you will grab it if you take your time and go slow

this is the tool im talking about LINK

I’d seriously try this for hours before giving in, both dry and wet.

How did this fit down the drain? No strainer or catch? I’m trying to picture what this looks like?

If you aren’t understanding, it’s likely your snake is getting caught at the P-trap if it’s 8-10 inches down. That may or may not mean the cap is there also.

Often times where plumbing clogs happen is 3 ways because where the 2 come together to combine into one there’s an internal diverter that restricts the pipe halfway to prevent back flows. But this restriction is the bottleneck in the pipe.

If there’s a crawl space this is and a hard turning Ptrap is where you should look first.

This. Go on the roof and plug the vent stacks and go into all the other bathrooms and seal the drains and overflows. Create a vacuum so the shop vac won't pull air thru vents. Gorilla tape works OK.
** not a plumber, but it worked for me pulling a mean clog that collected on the other side of the trap.

If you are touching it with the snake. But something solid on the end of the snake. Put a dab of hot glue on the solid surface and hit the cap. Give it time to dry and pull

Buy one of these on Amazon.

You’ll be able to see what it is as you can view the camera on your phone. It also has a hook attachment that might be able to hook or at least reposition the cap. This along with the auto grabber tool mentioned earlier and you might be able to remove it.

It has color camera and has a light at the tip

I give these as gifts now as they are so useful when you need it.
