When do I know they didn’t make it? Planted about three weeks ago. They looked good and I kept them watered pretty good. I wonder if I didn’t keep them watered enough. Been so dry and windy. Noticed Monday leaves we’re everywhere and they started to wilt and brown.

This happened to me with a saw tooth oak. I watered, and watered. Lost all of it's leaves. I left it alone, the next year it grew a ton. Maybe you are watering it too much

2 good soaks a week for the first year. Probably, just transplant shock. It went from ideal growing conditions to your yard.

How big a maple and how much are you watering it?

This, though I’d recommend one good soaking a week - possibly 2 in the extreme heat of summer, in the absence of rain. You can kill many plants from over watering more quickly than under watering.

They probably stand 12 ft. I was soaking them good every two days. I skipped a couple days counting on that rain to come through last weekend and it was a flop. I’m going to try some watering bags to help me keep them watered properly so I don’t miss days.

Don't water them everyday. The roots need to breath.

Twice a week should be fine if it's not raining.

Sounds like over-watering. Over-watering kills more plants than under-watering.

Lost every leaf on one and most on another. One that lost them all is already growing them back. So I’m pretty happy. I guess it was just shock. Maybe too hot and dry and not enough water. Couple nice rains mixed in with my regular watering seems like it helped.

I would leave it and wait for new leaves. Probably just stressed from transplant

This fricking thing is losing the leaves again. Cross my fingers.

Hot and dry - you’ve providing some supplemental watering? Takes a minimum of 1 full growing season for tree/shrubs to settle in and become established, sometimes two. Once you get them through this first summer/fall, I suspect they’ll be OK going forward.

In the future, if you can, try to target your tree/shrub planting in winter, less stress on the plants and less stress on you.

Yeah. I think its in a bad spot. Full sun and it’s on a little ridge in my yard. May be shedding water away. Would drilling some holes help with getting water down to the roots better.

I've seen untold numbers of young maples in the deep south drop leaves in August due to heat. Not that uncommon. Scratch the branch and see if it's still green. It most likely is.

Did you dig the planting hole twice was wide, more or less, than the diameter of the root ball? If so, I wouldn’t do anything but put a sprinkler out there and water for good while once or twice a week until we start getting some rain.

No it’s still green. Only reason I’m worried is because this is the second time since my first post in July?

Take your fingernail and scratch a small piece of the bark on a branch. If it’s green....it’s still alive. It is probably just transplant shock.
