Would like to get some Queen Palms by our pool. Was thinking about getting them online Fast Growing Trees - Queen Palm

Anyone have any experience with getting trees online? Is it better to buy them locally somewhere? If so, wheres a good spot to get palms in Northshore/New Orleans area?

We have had bad luck with queen palms. We have lost 3 trees, over time due to cold. We have given up on them

Queen Palms do not survive the freezes.

Look at the Sabal Palm, Mule Palm, or Windmill Palm.

I had better luck with small ones from someone local.

I’d advise against it. We have, I think, windmill palms and it is impossible to keep them looking decent. Ends of the fronds droop, regardless of what I do. They seem healthy because they’re producing new fronds like crazy.

I would advise against buying plants online. You will get the ones no one else wanted.

I had queen palms by mine. replace 4 times. They do not like cold weather. I have mules palms now. Was tired of digging out stumps and replacing them.

I haven't lived on the Northshore in 38 years. Sorry.

LSU Ag Center says
quote:

one of the most reliable palms for Louisiana is the windmill palm.

LINK

Butia capitata, also known as pindo palm, jelly palm, and other nicknames, doesn't get too tall to manage w/o professional help and is pretty. I've seen one encased in ice and survive. Fertilize in April and June. Cut the fruit stalks before they form fruit and drop; the fruit spoils and stinks.

Don't get Queens...they will die in the first freeze. Stick to Sylvesters (my favorite), Sabals, or Windmills.

Houston has several huge places that sell all kinds of palms. A quick google search would help you choose.

Queen palms are affordable and grow fast but a cold snap can kill them quickly.

Man I just removed two Mexican Fan Palms, 4 ft and 6 ft. They are cheapest and very hard to kill.

I have 6 Windmill Palms and they are the devil. Mine are almost 40' tall now and a BEAST to trim because of their location (around a pool) and their height. Granted, yours won't be that tall for now, but you will hate those trees in 15 years. Trust me.

In Baton Rouge area, a lot of palms are being killed by some kind of bacterial disease. Google Texas Palm Decline. Maybe consider something native instead.

I tend to think that in the Nola area you may be okay with Queen Palms and the cold but on Northshore much less likely.

Go with Chinese fan palm. Much hardier.
