Did it green up with the rest of the lawn and then die? Seems like Take All Root Rot. Does the spot retain water? I'd go get some Scotts disease x and apply a thin layer of peat moss.

Most of my front yard looks like this. It never greened up after the winter. I’ve raked out the dead grass, aerated, and put some seed down. Not sure if that was the right thing to do, but it looks like it’s getting better and some of the seed is germinating

I have spots of my yard that did the same thing and look similar. In places this happens every year. Some in the same spots, sometimes in new spots.

At this point, all I want is green. Don’t really care about the grass type. It looks that bad

agree. usually time will "heal" as it gets hot and grass grows and we cutting 1 x week. just want to make sure its not something that is gonna kill the whole yard because it looks like shite. Im a St Aug fan, have some in my backyard taking over, and wish I would have sodded the front with st. aug from day 1, 20 years ago.

Never too late…

I think the late freeze and weather really damaged a lot of lawns. I’ve noticed a lot of dead spots and slow to recover lawns.

You can just do it over the brown areas. Do you feel like they have gotten bigger recently or has it stopped?

I had some spots like that, roots seemed rotten and grass would be bleach white. I thinks it’s fungal because saw some spider web like fungal stuff on dew grass blades one am. I could pull up st August strands and roots are short and very dark.

I sprayed with fungal spray.. couple weeks later did Scott’s disease ex and am slowly applying peat moss to the worst spots . Seems to be working. I also applied grub ex because I was really paranoid about it.

looks like it has stopped, and also appears to maybe be greening up already over the past couple days.

I have read yall post about not doing "weed and feed" but rather doing it separately.

would you still recommend the Scotts Disease Ex on the brown spots, or apply a whole yard fertilizer? if so, what? thanks.
I think once the centipede starts greening and growing good, it usually chokes out the early weeds present now. but you are the expert. im listening.

Bonus S is high in nitrogen. If you put down what it generally calls for with other grasses, I could speculate you might have centipede decline. Centipede does not like alot of nitrogen.
It might be something totally different. I don’t know.

If you think that it stopped then I would apply Scott's disease X. The active ingredient is azoxystrobin which is the fungicide that I recommend for take all patch. I don't suggest putting a fungicide down unless you have to. You don't want to get a fungus that becomes resistant to fungicide. I would wait it out if it is getting better.

I had the same problem with my centipede. Simpson sod in Covington said it was "winter kill from the last freeze we had. He said it can be spotty kills just like your picture....looks just like my grass. Dig up the dead grass and replace with seed or sod.
He told me he lost 5 acres at his sod farm. D

Yeah, would not. I would not fertilize right now either. As mentioned by the poster above me it could be winter injury. If you have grass regrowing then it may have only affected the leaf and not the runner.

Well, the other issue I usually see is that these dead spots are breeding grounds for the worst weed issues I have. Crabgrass often takes over before the turf fills in. It’s a pretty big frustration for me. This year, I’ve been trying to burn off the thatch but haven’t had much luck. Some of my spots are lower, but not what I’d call “wet.” They drain ok. I can’t really make any rhyme or reason as to what’s causing it.
