Outdoor fire pit

I'm bout to remove my outdated above the ground pool and turn it into a sitting area with a fire pit (lots of decking around the pool). Can anyone recommend a good pit? Looks like Home Depot has a kit for about $500 that looks decent. Kinda high for a bunch of cement stones, but whatever. Not opposed to a free standing, but I want it to look nice. Thanks in advance.

My kids and I built one from rocks on our farm. I kinda gave them creative freedom and I liked it so much I ran propane to it. Cost was two or three bags of mortar.

Kids did a hell of a job, that looks nice!

This is going on a deck?
Do you want gas or wood burning?

BBQ Guys in BR has a bunch of options and kits for DIY.
I’ll be looking to build a fire pit/table here pretty soon. At worst I’ll be using burners and setups from them.

I built one of these last fall. Mine is 5 rings tall for a little added height. The black fire pit bowl just sits nestled on the top. Its convenient in that I can take it out and clean and hose it down and re-spray paint as needed.
Stones all came from Home Depot. Took a few stores before I could find enough matching ones. The metal pit was purchased from some random site online.

Have any pictures to share? We have a large area and want something not as uniform as the block ones.

Gas or wood burning?
Can't help with wood burning but there are a million pits out and YouTube videos out there.
If you are going with gas I would look at either Warming Trends Crossfire models (crazy hot but pricey) or one of the American Fire Glass kits. I just got a 30" drop in pan with an 18" 147,000BTU burner. You can order those on Home Depot for literally half the cost of the American Fire Glass website.

Any idea what the BRU rating on the burner is? How does it put off heat?

My dad has a Cowboy Cauldron. It's awesome and you can move it or put it up in storage if you don't want it out all the time. It's expensive but will last forever. If you really got in to it you can get accessories to cook on it. It's nice sitting around and have your feet under it on a cold night. Cowboy Cauldron

Looks close to what I am envisioning. Thanks for the picture. This will be wood burning. Not sure how long I will keep it. Long range plans would be to put an outdoor kitchen type area with brick fireplace....but that might be 5 years away.

Same. This was meant to be semi-temporary as well until we move, but I like it for the time being. I just bought can of fire/heat resistant paint and I found a cover for it at Home Depot earlier this week. We just spray painted it again this afternoon.

I’m about to order one of these from guy here in KC area. These will last a lifetime. He made one for Mahomes.

The Rough and Ridgid looks like the same style as this guy out of Georgia. I bought a 37” hemisphere 5 years ago and love it. I modified a grill grate and rotisserie to cook on it.
If I was buying another I would probably go with the elliptical model with lower sides.

Here is one from the other side. It sorta matches the house. My kids were 11 and 13 at the time. It was a 9 hour day. The deck? I built that with them when they were 10 and 8. People ask " ever wish you had boys?". I say no, wouldn't trade my girls for anything.

That looks awesome. Someone with metal working skills could get an old propane tank and make two of these and a dang nice smoker to boot.

Yep. The nice thing about the Rough and Rigid is they are designed so you can push the bowl and it will rotate for wind/smoke blockage.

Removed pool this past weekend. It was sunken in about 6 inches. Should I just haul regular dirt to level off the area, or go with masonry sand? I plan to put some type of stone for the sitting area/firepit. Or do I put some dirt and top dress it with sand? Undecided on what it the best route to take.
