Has anyone gone through this process lately or can you recommend a place to buy a mattress online? I'd rather not have to drive to stores to try out a mattress. I imagine they will all feel good in the store, but lately I've been waking up with pain in my lower back.

What type of mattress do you have now? Level of firmness?

Yeah, it's not like you'll be using it every night for the next several years

We got a Casper 4 years ago and we love it. Since then Purple has come out and have had many like it. I've recommended Casper to many folks and almost all love it. Thought it was going to be too firm the first night or two but after that its been money.

We bought one about a month ago and love it. Its on the firm side so if you like really soft it wouldn't be the best choice. Be aware the free pillows, sheets and mattress cover they "give" you is valued by them at $399 and is non-refundable. In other words, if you return the mattress they will keep $399 which is a scam and I wouldn't have bought from them if I was aware of this before purchasing. And I still haven't received the pillows and their customer service is almost non-existent although they may have been short staffed due to covid. They have been responding to my emails about the pillows the last week or so.

We ordered our Tempurpedic online 2 months ago.
It was a bit stiff for the first month and a half, still wayy more comfy than our old traditional worn-out POS, but it seems to have relaxed JUST A BIT over the last few weeks and is PERFECT now.

Unless you like a very firm mattress stay away, it’s like sleeping on your driveway. Then they make you take all these bullshite covers and pads and stuff before they initiate the return process, which they then make you find someone to donate it too. I couldn’t find anyone that took used mattresses so I just wrote it in on a goodwill receipt and still have the mother fricker in my attic.

No I talked to the same dude every time I talked with them on the phone, I think he’s the only person they have on the phones, this was last summer.

I ordered just the mattress, they sent me all that stuff and some kind of bed frame in an effort to stop me from returning it. It is also mostly all in my attic.

Based on feedback in other threads, I’m looking to buy a Purple hybrid (aka Purple 2) mattress. The 2 is their firmest mattress and that’s what they recommend for stomach/back sleepers. I also wake up hot almost nightly.

But I definitely want to go to the store to lay on one first. Some people have said that the feel of a Purple mattress was too “unique” and made them uncomfortable. If not Purple, Tuft & Needle got lots of good feedback in other threads.

I’m not a cheapskate, but my mattress purchases may make people question that.

Zinus Green Tea infused foam mattresses on amazon have been great. We have 2 ttwin mattresses and a king size mattress and have zero complaints. I wish I could say they were good for the price, but they are great so far, no matter the price.

Once the mattress "opens up" its literally like laying on a cloud.

The good thing about Purple is they have them at Macy's and you can try them out. I'm one of the people that found them too "unique." it had this weird honeycomb feel to it that I did not like at all.

ETA: We went Wink. Been happy.

This is anecdotal- just my personal experience- but the Purple 2 didnt really work for my lower back pain. Didnt make it any worse, but didnt help.
Otherwise a comfortable mattress and cool. In fact, my wife thinks it is too cool. I prefer the coolness, myself.
